[My brother in law has the G1 Tamron and love it on his D500. Another option. I am leaning toward the Nikon 200-500.

I currently use this lens for birding; it is incredibly sharp, even wide open- it is supposed to be one of nikon's best products.
What is this animal's habitat? We have red foxes in New York State. Any idea what breed this was?
That looks more like a Coyote than a Fox

No one has mentioned the Nikkor ED AF 28-300mm 3.5-5.6. I now use this as my walkabout lens to cover any situation. The colors are bright and the picture is sharp. Note: the fox was taken through a fence.
Definitely not a fox. We have many coyotes around us. That one looks to be a hybrid to me. That happens here too. The snout is not poined enough for a pre coyote. At least non I’ve seen. Perhaps different in your area, but not in central or eastern Oregon.
Strongly agree it wasn't a fox. I thought it might be a hunting dog of some kind. But then I saw this video, and thought perhaps it was a wolf of some variety. While searching, I found sites that compared dogs to coyotes and coyotes to wolves Then I found this video. Really impressive. Take a look:

Is anyone using this lens? I probably should have asked before buying it last weekend but I am very impressed with it so far. I'm looking to get a 70-200 in place of my current 70-300. What are your thoughts? Thank you for your comments.
I shoot this lens and love it . I got it the day Nikon came out with the 300 pf. I almost sent it back. Then decided to keep it and glad I did . You won’t be disappointed.
And 70-200 f/2.8 is so nice of a focal range . The Nikon 70-200 f/4 is also supposed to be very nice too if you don’t need f/2.8 .

APS in Morton Grove, IL and Midwest Camera Repair in Wyandotte, MI are Nikon Authorized Repair Centers (just two of several) that repair / replace the ring focus motors, do lens calibration and other repairs. The ring focus motors are still available. The ring motors for the 300mm and 400mm f/2.8's are also still available.
Thanks for its info. I have the 80-200 afs. Wow what a great lens. It needs some work. It may be Midwest I had repair my d810. I asked them about fixing the 80-200 and they said send it in.
I worry about the cost vs buying another.
I also have the new 70-200 e fl vr. It’s nice but there is something special about that lens . I just love the bokeh. It grabs focus and won’t let go also. It does better than the new 70-200 e at obtaining focus in less than optimal conditions.
I have the original version of this lens, the AF 300mm f/4 ED-IF, which was Nikon's first 300mm f/4 autofocus lens. It's quite heavy and beautifully made, but I'm not convinced that it's a really sharp lens. Its successor, the 300mm f/4 AF-S version, is widely regarded as being optically superior.
