G1 or G2 version of the Tamron?

What is your everyday lens? The Af-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1/3.5-5.6 GII ED lens has been mine for years. Its wide-angle flexibility has been extremely useful when the need arises. For special occasions I put on my 10-20mm for excellent ultra-wide angle shots, and the Tamron 150-600mm for nature (especially birds in flight) images. I did purchase the 70-300mm Nikon for medium telephoto shots, but since purchasing the Tamron, it scarcely sees the light of day.

Typo, 80-200 f2.8

Correct, meant to say, 80/200AFD f.2.8. ED. Oops, thanks.

Yes, I have it and love it. I also have and love the AF 180mm F2.8 D EDIF. If you want something like the 70-200 but a bit less money, you can't go wrong with the AF 80-200 F2.8 D ED. I'd stay away from the AFS version as Nikon can't repair the AFS motor anymore.

APS in Morton Grove, IL and Midwest Camera Repair in Wyandotte, MI are Nikon Authorized Repair Centers (just two of several) that repair / replace the ring focus motors, do lens calibration and other repairs. The ring focus motors are still available. The ring motors for the 300mm and 400mm f/2.8's are also still available.

Any of the lenses you mentioned will give you excellent images. If the 70-300 is the VR version then much better.
I agree, if you already have a 300mm f4 lens it makes sense to buy the 70-200. I hope you already know the intended use of those lenses otherwise you are not making the right choices for your photography.
You did not mention what you need those lenses for.

The AFS model of this lens was discontinued in 2003. The AFD version is still sold new by Nikon. The 70-200 AFS replaced the 80-200 AFS. I just got off the phone with Nikon in NY and they informed me that the AFS ring motors are no longer available. Now it may be that independent facilities might still have some, but Nikon USA stopped repairing the 80-200 F2.8 AFS version back in 2012...

No one has mentioned the Nikkor ED AF 28-300mm 3.5-5.6. I now use this as my walkabout lens to cover any situation. The colors are bright and the picture is sharp. Note: the fox was taken through a fence.

I currently use this lens for birding; it is incredibly sharp, even wide open- it is supposed to be one of nikon's best products.

I am using the AFS Nikkor 300mm f/4 as well as the Nikkor AFS 70-200mm f/2.8F VRII and am very please with the results. I use the 300 most often with a TC17EII and the IQ is excellent.

Thank you for your input thinking about getting the 200-500 also.

This lens is one I carry along with my 200-500 mm. Very sharp, very light, they repeated the formula on this lens when they made the new 500 5.6 mm. Yet another winner from the minds at Nikon.

The ever y day lens is tokina 24-70 f2.8 that is marvelous. I have a 30 year old sigma 400 5.6 that I have enjoyed but it is having some issues. I do mostly landscape and nature so feel comfortable with the longer lens just trying to cheaply upgrade the quality of the class. Thanks for the comments and asking the hard questions I sometimes don't ask myself.

Thanks for pointing out the 80 to 200 there have been great deals on it around here for 450 to 500. So it deserves consideration.
