thanks now I need to figure out the portrait scene mode and change ISO to 800. I am beginner

I need to figure out what -VR- is (I guess it video) does it need to be on or off

The nice thing about the Scene modes is they camera will still make the decisions for you, though that could be what's giving you grief at the moment :) Closeup mode just tells the camera you're getting close to your subject as opposed the the A Auto mode where the camera has to guess what you're trying to do and hopefully guesses it's a closeup shot.

No. It’s Vibration Reduction.

This is a silly guessing game until you post a “bad” image. You will get quick and correct answers onc you do.

Yes, Af-A I guess it turned on I am lost.I am not sure A/F is turned on and cannot find camera. Sorry to be such a novice, love taking pictures but got long ways to go. On the lens it is on A.

Good, it was worth checking that it’s on, thanks. If you take a normal photo or anything like your back yard is that in focus or are all images out of focus? If you can upload a blurry photo we will be able to see if it’s a focus problem or a shake problem

VR = Vibration Reduction. Your camera helps you hold it still, helps reduce blur from camera movement.

You can press the shutter down half way before you take the picture to check focus. Then be careful to be steady
