The NFL has issued a finding that the kicked ball was tipped by an Eagles player.

The Wall Street Journal published a study where someone analyzed if "icing the kicker" by calling a timeout just before the kicker makes his field goal attempt had any outcome on the game. The conclusion was that "icing the kicker by calling timeout" had no statistical influence on negatively affecting the kicker's attempt and was an old strategy mainly based on superstition. In this case, the superstition worked!

I have also seen a kicker miss the kick that didn't count because a time out was called, and then proceed to make the second kick that counted. Any stats of that?

Evidence that "icing a kicker" is not a strategy opposing coaches should employ..... unless they're superstitious!

In some cases the holder has a responsibility for the kicker to do well. Icing the kicker is a psychological ploy to get the kicker to get nervous when he kicks again. The first kick is good. The second one bad. I've seen this work at least one game per season for years. Call it what you want. Despite the ball being tipped, it worked. Philly goes on to the next game. The Bears get to watch them on TV next Sunday. Cody Parkey is the Bears problem next football season. Not the Eagles.

go eagles!!!! ... my pet peeve ... what is the difference throwing the ball 10 -20 yards downfield into the ground or spiking the ball ...... BOTH intentional grounding.... one penalized one not????? WHY

There's a big difference. It's all in the rules even if the Ref's don't know the rules and that was very evident with a catch, fumble, and missed call. Then the Ref's had to stand around with egg all over their faces. Now back to your point. If there is an offensive player in the area then it not intentional grounding, according to the rules, or if the QB throws the ball to avoid a loss out of bounds past the line of scrimmage if he's out of the pocket. There's a difference between spiking and "clocking" the ball. When you are watching your home team it's hard to sometimes stay objective as to what happened right in front of you. Now when you are just watching two teams play for the enjoyment of watching football it's easy to see that one team only has 11 players on the field at one time, or they are supposed to, but the other team seems to have 16 players on their side, counting the Ref's. Tell me that it isn't so.

My pet peeve is that we are watching a lot of commercials with very little football thrown in.

Nick Foles, Backup Quarterback to the Philadelphia Eagles, has pulled off another post season victory, because of a missed field goal with seconds remaining in the final quarter of play. Cody Parkey, the field goal kicker, has had problems in the regular season missing field goals. But, the Offense scored enough points to offset his previously missed field goals. Not this time. He signed a multi-year million dollars guaranteed contract. So, he gets paid regardless of his abilities. I was actually rooting for the Bears. They had a 12-4 regular season. The Eagles barely got into the Playoffs with a 9-7 regular season. Can Nick Foles win back to back Superbowls?
Nick Foles, Backup Quarterback to the Philadelphia... (show quote)

His contract is for 4 years at 15 million, with 60% guaranteed at signing.

Whoever negotiated this guy's contract should be fired along with parkey, he's with his 7th team in the 5 years he's been in the NFL , that alone should have been enough of a red flag to hand anyone a contract like he got.

I saw that story on ESPN. I tell you, the Field Goal Kicker can be the Scapegoat or the Hero. The Eagles froze the kicker with a timeout just before the ball was kicked. The next kick was bad. Icing the kicker by calling a timeout, has become commonplace in the NFL. In this case, it worked.

That’s why the old time coaches like Madden would go out to kick the field goal in that situation on third down......gets the time out used, come out of it and try the third down end zone play, and kick on fourth down.

I definitely agree. He had problems missing kicks as far back as October. He was saved by the Offense scoring enough points that it did not matter. This time when he was needed to pull out an important playoffs win, he failed his team. He had the nerve to say to Reporters, after the game, that he won't have any problem sleeping tonight. Heck, if I was getting that kind of money, I wouldn't have any problems sleeping either. The Buffalo Bills went to a Superbowl 4 years in a row. And lost all four games. One of the four games was lost on a simple missed field goal. They would have won that one Superbowl game. The Buffalo Bills since then, have never made it back to a Superbowl. As Herman Edwards, former coach of the New York Jets, says, "You Play To Win The Game." Not almost to win it.

Fly, Eagles, fly. No body loves them like a Philly native...and nobody can hate like we can. Foles has proven his talent...and his worth...I hope they don't trade him.
A Philly native presently stuck in Bears country.

Then, Carson Wentz, the Starter will be on the Trade Block. The last running Quarterback, who continually got hurt, was RG3 of the Redskins. A Heisman Trophy Winner from Baylor University. He's now the Third String Quarterback for the Ravens. Soon to be the 2nd String, after their previous First String Quarterback, Joe Flacco, will be traded during the off season.

Slo-mo video shows Parkey's kick was actually tipped by a Philly special teams player, which altered the trajectory of the ball and resulted in the double doing off the upright and the crossbar. His previous kick a few seconds earlier, which was negated by a timeout called by Philly, easily sailed through the uprights and would have been the game winner.

I did not know this - about the ball being tipped by Philly. heartbreak loss for the Bears.
Beowulf, I live in Merrimac (the upper northeast corner of Mass) and so I will be hoping that the Pats can defeat the Chargers. Also, hoping that KC loses to the Colts in KC but I don't see that happening. IF the Pats win this Sunday and KC also wins, then the Pats travel to KC for the AFC championship. That will be a real tough game for the Pats. I am not sure if I have this correct.

Both the Kansas City Chiefs 12-4, and the NE Patriots 11-5 are division winners, and are afforded Home Court advantage, which is why the Chargers 12-4, a 5th seed Wildcard team, has to travel to Boston. And 6th seed Colts 10-6, travels to KC. The Chargers have a better winning record than the Patriots. But, that doesn't matter at all. It's win or go home. Turnovers will determine who wins. Fumbles, interceptions, and that dreaded missed field goal when it can get a win.
