The new iPad (not Pro) will work with the Apple pencil, but not the mini iPad; according to Apple's website.
The iPad Pro 2018 is only compatible with the pencil2. The earlier iPad is only compatible with the pencil 1.
Although the earlier iPads could accept storage devices, the iPad Pro 2018 with the USB C connector will only transfer photos through its USB C port. Other types of file are not transferred - yet.
Good advice to either go to an Apple store or call them via the number on their website. They know exactly what the device can do, unlike some of us here! ;-)

My iPad is very long in the tooth, so I am planning to upgrade.
Appreciate any advice you may have about which model, features, and auxiliary stuff.
I use LR Mobile to edit photos when away from my desktop. And, would like to consider using iPad to download pics when on trips, do some editing and then Import into LR desktop when returning home.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Lots of good comments above. Here are mine.
Re the “would like to consider” sentence. I highly suggest you try that workflow and see how it works for you. You should be able to do it with your current iPad.
If you pan to edit photos et. Al. I suggest you consider the iPadPro.
And don’t cheap out on the memory. Would you buy a 4WD SUV with a 10 gallon gas tank? Same thing.
Disclosure I am typing this on an iPadPro.
FYI - LR Mobile has been renamed to LR Creative Cloud. Just saying....
I have an iPad Pro 10.5 with the first series pencil, and they work together. My newer basic iPad 9.7 iPad will not pair with the pencil, so I use a ‘Paper 53’ pencil. My newest iPad Pro 12.9 uses the pencil 2nd series, and that pencil so far only works with the newest Pad. Now in case I created more confusion, I suggest calling apple directly, or better, go to their actual store if there is one near you.

Yes you did create some confusion. I believe from reading the above that you have 3 iPads.
The 1st Apple pencil works with the first iPad Pro. That's it. It does not work with the basic iPad nor the newest iPadPros.
The 2nd Apple pencil works with the latest iPadPro. Thats it.

I just have to rant about Apple's iPad and pencil products. Could they have made it more confusing and less compatible?
First, disclaimer, I love my iPad and iPadPro. Great pieces of hardware. But the hardware is severely limited by iOS. I distain iOS. When Apple was naming MacOS after big cats, they should have named iOS "Tabby". It is only a shadow of MacOS and I cannot do nearly the same things on iOS as MacOS. I can do things much more efficiently on MacOS and there are simply things that I cannot do on iOS. For example in Mail, the mail folders display a flat view. There is no hierarchy. WTF? After all these years that has not changed. I cannot collapse my sub-folders into the top layer I must see ALL the folders all the time. That is one of many differences between iOS and MacOS. And no file manager in iOS? They just recently added Folders to iOS, but did they add a Finder Nooooo. And I don't seem to be able to add or change folders on the iPAD, only on iCloud. Grrrrr.
Why the hell do I have to run iOS on an iPadPro that has more CPU power than my older Mac?
I want to run MacOS on my iPad. I feel at this point, that I will not buy another iPad, Pro or otherwise, until I can run MacOS on it.
Sorry for the rant.

More confusion?

You are correct! I stand corrected. (I actually am standing). The first Apple Pencil is comparable with the 6th generation iPad as well as the 1st and 2nd generation iPadPros. But not the 3rd generation. Boo hiss toward Apple.
Again I ask. Could Apple have made this more confusing or less useful? Whatever happened to backward compatibility? This is definitely the wrong thing. S. Jobs must be spinning in his grave.
The Apple Pencil works only with iPad Pro. The new pencil won’t work with the new iPad Pros.

Not the whole truth.
One of the pencils works with the non-Pro 6th generation IPad.
I just wish they’d update the mini 4. Mine is starting to go on me (battery life) and I absolutely love the size for traveling.
