My iPad is very long in the tooth, so I am planning to upgrade.

Appreciate any advice you may have about which model, features, and auxiliary stuff.

I use LR Mobile to edit photos when away from my desktop. And, would like to consider using iPad to download pics when on trips, do some editing and then Import into LR desktop when returning home.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

The first question would be is iPad Pro in the mix? If I had the budget, I'd buy the 12.9" maxed out. Otherwise, I'd go the 11" Pro with as much storage as I could afford. The only other choice would be whether you need the data capability or not.

Totally agree with emphasis on maxing the internal storage. The 32gb models get you an iPad that will be full before you know it. Only other issue is whether you have a need for a network capable device or can be satisfied with WiFi only. Lastly, Apple also has a limited selection of refurbished units that carry the same warranty as new devices.

I’ve had various models of iPad over the years and last fall swapped out my Air 2 for a 12.9” Pro. I couldn’t be happier. I think you have to make a pro and con list to decide which you need. The Pro is not cheap but does have remarkable abilities. I use both Adobe Creative Cloud and iCloud so have found that the 512gb is big enough for me. I suppose it depends if you keep images on the device or upload them to the cloud. I also always have my iPhone with me so if i cant find WiFi (which is rare) I can use the hot spot on my phone to connect. I love using the Pencil 2 with Lightroom and am looking forward to Photoshop later this year.
However, I have found all the iPads I have used over the years have been great for photography.
The release of iOS 13 later this year is rumored to bring many positive changes for the iPad.
Refurbished gear as 47Greyfox states can be a good option.

If you get a Pro, the pencil is a great addition. The USB-C card reader is essential. I use the Apple Folio keyboard (as I write a lot) but others are available.

If you have an actual "Apple Store" in your area, GO THERE! Same price as there fare traded. Your new iPad will have exactly the same layout as your old one and they will be more than happy to answer ALL of your questions at this time. Good advice on buying lots of memory.
I love my iPad Pro and pencil and use it for all my photo editing with wonderful results with and more improvements are coming soon.

I believe the “pencil” is not exclusive to the Pro. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

The question is can the pencil be used on regular new model iPads; not only the Pro.
I am almost sure that it can.

2 small points: the Apple 2 and Apple 1 pencils along with their respective pro models are not compatible, and memory stick storage is available with USB on one end and the lightning connector on the other, so you don't have to max internal memory. Mine is 32gb by Lexor and I believe 64 was available. They are also great for file transfer to and from computers

We know that. If not the Pro, what?

The new series of iPads work with the pencil, the iPad cost $329 and the pro line. Pencil I believe is an extra $100
