Left, the fence line leads your eye into the picture, not out. BTW my crew points out that there are no dogs in either one.

In the first I want to follow the snow left towards the mountain and feel the fence doesn't want me to do that.

I like the first one...it's a lot cleaner looking.

I definitely like the first. My eye leads me to and thru the gap in the mountains. And just an aside since you didn't ask, I'd crop out some of the foreground. The part with the biggest tracks as they are not part of nature.

I like the fence on the left side best. The ruts in the snow lead your eye into the photo.

I personally like the first one more. For several reasons. I like the overall composition better, which is just not the fence...the lines lead my eye all the way to the pass between the peaks. The second one kind of stops in the middle of the image. Also, the quality of the foreground snow is nicer in the first. And the sky is more interesting, although I would give it just a slight burn layer to add some drama. Other than that, the three peaks plant one dead center, which I don't care for.

Just my two cents.

Incidentally, it's a beautiful scene and they are both quite nice!

Nice. The first, and crop the left side down some more to eliminate the dead space to the left of the base of the mountain.

This may be totally bogus, but I think we’ve been conditioned by the Western reading and writing method to scan pages, and even our surroundings, from left to right with our eyes. So, placing the fence on the left naturally leads our eyes into the image. Placing the fence on the right provides too quick of a path out of the image. To me, the left side placement of the leading line is more comfortable to view and my eye lingers longer in the image. FWIW.

Thanks Bob. On a happy note, after the snowstorm today, there shouldn't be any grass poking up.

Agree. To continue the comment about the second one - all of the grass showing through the snow is rather unattractive.

The first one looks more natural to me. In the placement of the fence in the second shot, you brought in a lot of shrubs that detract from the composition. This may only be an opinion, but I trust me eyes.
