Taking photos in nature is a passion of mine and here's a couple more. I couldn't decide which picture I look better. The fence brings your eye to the mountain valley in the background, but is the right side or the left side of the fence more pleasing to the eye? I tend towards the left side view, but I think that has to do with my left eye being more dominant.
Left, the fence line leads your eye into the picture, not out. BTW my crew points out that there are no dogs in either one.
I like the second more.
I feel more constrained by the fence in the first.
The first one is definitely better. The road and the fence lead you to the background and to the gap between the mountains. I personally really do like this image, even without the second one. The second one has that nasty clump of tree clutter in the mid ground area and there is no leading line to get you to the mountains.
Damn! Tell your crew that I'm sorry and here's proof that they were with me and I didn't venture out without them.

DEFINITELY THE FIRST. (See Ansel Adams !)
This may be totally bogus, but I think we’ve been conditioned by the Western reading and writing method to scan pages, and even our surroundings, from left to right with our eyes. So, placing the fence on the left naturally leads our eyes into the image. Placing the fence on the right provides too quick of a path out of the image. To me, the left side placement of the leading line is more comfortable to view and my eye lingers longer in the image. FWIW.

Agree. To continue the comment about the second one - all of the grass showing through the snow is rather unattractive.
To my eyes the first shot looks compositionally better.
The first one looks more natural to me. In the placement of the fence in the second shot, you brought in a lot of shrubs that detract from the composition. This may only be an opinion, but I trust me eyes.
Love all your stuff, Mark. And especially love your use of B & W!!
