On an extended vacation right now and realize that after 5 1/2 years, I no longer enjoy lugging around my D600, now with a 24-120 F4 lens. Received my email today from Nikon with refurbished sale prices. Seriously considering going back to DX. At current refurbished prices is a D500 ($1400.) worth more than twice the price of a D7200 ($600.)? Find that my shooting these days are grand kids soccer games, vacation/travel, nothing more complicated than a sunrise or sunset.

The D500 has been in high demand for a DX camera...much better AF performance and faster processor (Ex5 vs Ex4) than the 7200...for action photography the 500 is better, but all around the 7200 is quite capable...most of the weight savings is in the lenses...so plan on getting DX lenses to compliment....the D500 is not much smaller than FX bodies such as the D6xx/D7xx...probably on par weight wise. Since I plan to master BIF I do see a D500 in my future....but I would still keep the D7200 also.

The D500 is priced great and would be a great action camera for the soccer games, but, honestly, it will be just as heavy as the D600. The D7200 is also a great camera, but I do not like it as will for action, but if you are not too particular, and will not be taking that many action shots, it will work fine for what you like to photograph other than the soccer. If you sell the D600, keep the 12-120mm lens, it is a great lens and will work fine on a DX camera.
If you have a camera store in your area, check with them and see if they have the cameras you are looking at and pick one up to see how they feel and to test the weight. I do not own a mirrorless body, but a lot of people are changing to them for the lighter weight. You may want to check them out as well. I don't mean to get off subject, just a suggestion.

Good advice check out the cameras at a store or rent for a few days and see which one you like.

It was $1096.97 when it came out Jerry. It's now $797.00 new. At $599.00 it's a steal. A GREAT camera. Better ISO performance than the D500 and fast enough to catch any action coming your way. I sent my copy of the D500 back and still have and use the D7200. That said, I also have the D600 and it out performs the D7200 in ISO performance and weighs about the same.

I saw that last night. Great price. On the other hand, it cost $800 when it was introduced three years ago, so it's not exactly a bargain. The D750 dropped $300 within a few months of introduction.

If you can get a refurbished D7200 from Nikon USA for $599, that's a great deal, despite it having a 90 warranty instead of a one year warranty. I'm wanting a D500. I'm practicing patience. What's good, is that I won't have to buy DX lenses, because I already own some. Better than switching to FX lenses, if I were purchasing a full frame Nikon DSLR.

There’s no significant weight saving with either camera. Something to think about, swapping the camera and glass for mirrorless/ micro 4/3s. Excellent cameras with excellent glass and less expensive to boot! I took the plunge and couldn’t be happier with the results. I think my images have also improved because I’m shooting more often now that I’ve lightened my load!

I too am getting tired of lugging the weight and bulk of my beloved D500–especially with its heavy 70-200 f/2.8. But in terms of its speed and buffer size, its low light capabilities, and its durability, I have yet to find a a better camera for fast indoor sports, like ice hockey.

But then I rented the Fujifilm XT-3. Now that’s a very viable option. Lighter, smaller, tough and fast and accurate AF. Definitely worth a try.

I sold my D500 and all of my Nikon lens to purchase the X-T3. I was tired of lugging around the weight so it was a great move for me.

Nikon currently has the 7200 refurbished for $599. If I hadn’t upgraded a year and a half ago from my D5000 to a D7100 I’d do this upgrade in a heartbeat.

I did the exact same thing about the same time you did. I love my D7100. I'm not sure what the difference is between the 7100 and the 7200, but I would guess it's similar. That would be my choice for the price.

I still have my D5000 with an extra lens, filters, case, extra battery etc. Is anyone interested in buying it? $200.00 for the package.

D500, hands down! I had a D7100 and sold it because it doesn’t do as well in low light plus the ISO can be higher w/o noise on the D500

I traded in my D700 with a 28-300 lens for a D7100 with an 18-300 lens five years ago for weight reasons. I recently traded in my D7100 for a D750. I missed the low light performance, cropping latitude and enlargement capability with full frame. The D750 is somewhat lighter than my old D700 and I’m now using all prime lenses with the D750. It gives me full frame performance without the extra weight. You’ll still get great pictures either way you choose. Good luck.

Just went through this myself.....

Read comparisons on the web and replies here, then, as I did, go to your local camera store and get hands on with the most mentioned here.. That's where the rubber meets the road.... Take a few shots with each in store and get a feel for them.

BTW....I got the 7200.

The D600 is actually 10 grams lighter than the D500, I have the D600 and I love it.

Rich43224 the D600 & D610 are lame... I owned a D610 and it's AF was worse than terrible... it is straight out of the D7000...
That said the D610 has a fantastic sensor if you are shooting still life i.e. landscapes... I dumped my D610 for a D810... difference is night and day... you might consider the D810 it is superb.

As for the D500? I dumped mine quickly owing to want of image quality... a.k.a. it isn't at the same level of the D7200
https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Nikon-D500-versus-Nikon-D7200-versus-Nikon-D750___1061_1020_975

Yes the D500 is a great tool for those who "spray and pray"

I'm extremely satisfied with my pair of D810 and D7200 however I shoot fashion and beauty commercially and soccer only occasionally... They work well but not as well in the studio as my D3x which is indeed my studio camera... and yields superb results in it's base ISO.

Bottom Line? Rich43224 if I had to pick only one body for all genre it would be the D810...
Why? Please look at the two examples below... these were captured with a D810
Also the third which was captured with a D7200

I also purchased the D7200.

My opinions and values, in no particular order, were:

D7200:

Slighter lighter and smaller.

Built in flash that is actually really good if you aren't trying to light a really large area.

Two cards without having an QD card.

Better self timer, more time settings.

More flash settings in camera.

Way lower price.

Holds better detail at ISO 25,600.

Slightly larger viewfinder.

D500:

Slightly larger and 1 generation newer sensor.

Better rear screen.

50 ISO setting, YES I shot a lot on film at ISO 25.

10 FPS

DIFFERENCES THAT MADE NO DIFFERENCE TO ME:

The D500 can shoot at ISO 910,827,354, or some ridiculous number ... but by ISO 12,800 its starting to fall apart in the details.

The D7200 has slightly more MP.

The D500 shoots at higher resolution video.

The D500 has 153 AF points vs 15 for the D7200.

These were the basis for my conclusions.

The readers needs/wants may be identical/similar/different than mine.

For me, the bottom line is what are you going to use it for? For me, the D500 is tops for sports shooting. It does not have a flash, but then the flashes on camera bodies don't have a lot of range anyway. So for group shots or distance, I always use an SB800/900 for flash power. The D7200 does not have the lower light shooting quality of the D500 (although the D500 is not that great either in low light) and is more of a portrait landscape camera than for shooting sports.

D500 has nice features but is a brick.

It may be a brick, but it's an exceptionally capable brick and well worth carrying. At 71, I certainly would enjoy lighter, but the results I get keep me happy with my D500. This does not mean I don't recognize the quality that can be had with lighter systems, just saying one can be happy with a brick.
