Nikon D500 or 7200?

On an extended vacation right now and realize that after 5 1/2 years, I no longer enjoy lugging around my D600, now with a 24-120 F4 lens. Received my email today from Nikon with refurbished sale prices. Seriously considering going back to DX. At current refurbished prices is a D500 ($1400.) worth more than twice the price of a D7200 ($600.)? Find that my shooting these days are grand kids soccer games, vacation/travel, nothing more complicated than a sunrise or sunset.

Your thoughts from those who have experience with these bodies will be appreciated.

Nikon currently has the 7200 refurbished for $599. If I hadn’t upgraded a year and a half ago from my D5000 to a D7100 I’d do this upgrade in a heartbeat.

I own both and am a bird & wildlife shooter. IMO, both are excellent cameras. The D500 does not have a built in flash, so that may be an issue for you based on the info you gave. Don’t know if 2 card slots are important to you. Both the D7200 and the D7200 have dual slots. The D7200 takes SD cards. The D500 takes an XQD card and an SD card. Those XQD cards are very pricey. If you only use 1 card slot, the cost of the XQD cards should not be an issue. Just use the one slot with an SD card.

Based on the info you gave on what you shoot, I would go with the D7200 and use the savings over the D500 toward other photography equipment. Thems my 2 cents.

The D500 is priced great and would be a great action camera for the soccer games, but, honestly, it will be just as heavy as the D600. The D7200 is also a great camera, but I do not like it as will for action, but if you are not too particular, and will not be taking that many action shots, it will work fine for what you like to photograph other than the soccer. If you sell the D600, keep the 12-120mm lens, it is a great lens and will work fine on a DX camera.
If you have a camera store in your area, check with them and see if they have the cameras you are looking at and pick one up to see how they feel and to test the weight. I do not own a mirrorless body, but a lot of people are changing to them for the lighter weight. You may want to check them out as well. I don't mean to get off subject, just a suggestion.

Thanks. I have considered mirrorless, but Nikon is out of reach price wise. Otherwise it will involve a full system change. I too much in glass for that.

I see no weight saving moving to the D500 or D7200.

You said you no longer enjoy lugging around your D600, going from FX to DX isn't going to make your DSLR that much smaller or lighter. Going by the cameras you mentioned, I'd go for the D500 for soccer games. Good luck.

D5600 a better choice than either if you are looking to reduce weight. Plus it has much better features than D7200. And takes same images.

D500 has nice features but is a brick.

DX lenses are generally smaller and lighter. But as noted D5600 better choice if weight is the issue.

Have both a D500 and D7200. The D7200 will work great for what you shoot. The 3 major differences IMHO are the D500 has a more advanced AF system, a higher continuous frame rate (10fps compared to 6fps) and the D7200 has an internal flash where the D500 does not. Now, if you would have said wildlife and birding I would have said the D500.

I too am getting tired of lugging the weight and bulk of my beloved D500–especially with its heavy 70-200 f/2.8. But in terms of its speed and buffer size, its low light capabilities, and its durability, I have yet to find a a better camera for fast indoor sports, like ice hockey.

But then I rented the Fujifilm XT-3. Now that’s a very viable option. Lighter, smaller, tough and fast and accurate AF. Definitely worth a try.

I own both, (mostly for sports) IMO the D500 is by far one of Nikon's best Pro body they made/makes. When shooting sports, I always use the D500 and the D5 in that order. My 7200 has maybe 2,500 clicks and now it thinks it's a paper weight in the box. For sports, actually for a DX... I would choose the D500 every day of the week.

I have owed the D7200 and currently the D500, both are wonderful but their is no significant weight savings over the D600 body. You could add the 16-50 f2.8-4, which on either body, would give you the equivalent of the 24-120, now that lens will save you some weight, but still, not that much.

I saw that last night. Great price. On the other hand, it cost $800 when it was introduced three years ago, so it's not exactly a bargain. The D750 dropped $300 within a few months of introduction.

According to B&H the D7200 is 0.4 pounds lighter plus the weight of a flash that the D500 would need.

Whether that is enough to matter is the buyers decision.

I hope this helps.
