Fire Extinguishers - Messy!

I found this in a review on Amazon. Women are really concerned about keeping the house neat.
"We almost had a bad fire because my wife was trying to put a pan fire out with water and towels. She said she was intimidated by the normal fire extinguisher we have since it's big and would make a huge mess."

As I am sure you know. trying to put a grease fire out with water only makes things worse. A mess with a fire extinguisher is far better than a major house fire. USE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER

Kinda understandable if it's a little bitty pan fire.
CO₂ are cleaner, but usually much larger.

I recently had an electrical panel box fire in my basement...I used the extinguisher....It made a mess...I didn't care the immediate problem was solved....even the electrician mentioned that I didn't hold back on the extinguisher.....I still didm't care, my house didn't burn down!

Use a CO2 extinguisher, no mess, Halons are not EPA approved or maybe not even sold.

NO, using water on a grease fire of ANY size is utter insanity. If you think the mess from a fire extinguisher is bad, try looking at the mess of everything you own in ashes.
You need an ABC rated fire extinguisher in your home, not just BC which CO2 is rated.

Yes, I've seen demos on TV - burning grease and water are a bad combination. Baking soda will extinguish a small grease fire safely.

'Way back there were some "fire extinguishers" that were made from a glass ball filled with carbon tetrachloride. The carbon tetrachloride was supposed to evaporate and exclude oxygen from the area of the fire.
Eventually some chemist pointed out that CO2 + CCl4 -> 2 COCl2 (phosgene, used in WWI)

The easiest and correct answer is to put the lid on the pan.

Duh!! Would you rather have a mess or be standing in the ashes? Seems like a no brainer to me.

Or something that will not burn rapidly. Depending on size: Folded hand towel, cookie sheet, plate, cutting board anything with a wider flat bottom, another pan or pot.
I've always wondered about baking soda. How do you get it in the flame without getting burned? And how often is OOps said when there isn't enough because you used a partial box.

Not only is an ABC extinguisher great for putting out grease, oven, and electrical fires, but it is also excellent defense against a home intruder. It temporarily blinds and clogs airways. And when empty makes a great bat!
