CO₂ are cleaner, but usually much larger.
If it's just a pan fire, just throw a lid over the pan, or use a cookie sheet to cover it.

Actually I have both, CO2 is no good on an electrical fire but great on grease and oil.
I used to use baking soda - it produces CO2 and is fine for small fires but still makes a mess with fire everywhere. Plus it's sometimes hard to get close enough to pour it onto the fire. Now I find that watching the pot and using gas burners works much better. But fire extinguisher is here just in case...
With our old farmhouse I'm more worried about wiring, though most has been replaced, or chimney fires, though we replaced the old chimney with triple-wall insulated pipe a few years ago.
