It is my understanding that the Lumix FX200 has a CONSTANT f2.8 at all zoom positions. Example: 600mm @f.2.8. If this is true, it is unheard of on any other camera to date. Maybe, I read the specs wrong, but again, if it's true, WOW, and of course, it is very expensive compared to other cameras of this class.

This thread is for the Canon SX40.....
PLEASE refrain from trying to HiJack this thread just because you don't like this camera.

Would be nice if the next version includes the capabilities of the CHDK to allow RAW, remote release, additional ISO and speed capabilities, etc.

Nice, and expensive.

CHDK is free to ANYONE! The capabilities are there, the programming has been done, all Canon has to do is include it and with NO OTHER CHANGES, they can add value without changing the cost. It would NOT be expensive to do.

Unfortunately I can't figure out the instructions to get it to start recording in RAW. I need a dear dummy step one step two step three instruction manual.

Don't take it personal. I did not say, I did not like the Canon, I have one. Just made a suggestion on the Lumix that is coming out this month. I thought you would like to be educated on what's new. But I guess I was wrong.

They would have to customize it to the specs of the new camera before they could release it, and do all the testing and documentation that goes along with software changes. Plus the time involved would delay getting the cams out to market, which delays that money coming in.

I'd love to see that happen, but realistically, I think it's too much to expect.

The Quick Start Guide is here. Skip to the section headed "RAW Parameters".

Terrific article hj. Thanks!!! I had the SX30 which I lost by dropping it in ocean water, ouch!!. I loved that camera and carried it almost everywhere I did not need my DSLR and also with it.

This article helps a lot, and adds doubt.. I have been looking at Panasonic cameras features and the raw capabilities is an important factor along with other features, but the SX40 offers the improvement of noise at higher ISO. A tough choice. I'll check Panasonic's coming models.

Thanks again

I think your comment is inappropriate. When discussing cameras, folks frequently make observations about competing cameras other than the one first mentioned. Read any review, in any source, whether it is about autos or whatever and your will find comparisons made. How else does one learn about options?

Want to see some that are faaaar away to get an idea of what I'm getting. I've gone to the "search" but none mention how far away an item is. Thanks.

These pics are all hand held. The water tower is approx 1.5 miles from where I was standing. All 3 are straight from camera, no crop or any other post processing.

WOW!!! You can bring the water tower in that close from 1.5 miles away. I'm already sold on getting one but after seeing more - anyone who don't get one is nuts. How could anyone go wrong with this?

I have the SX30. The SX30 and SX40 are nearly identical in performance. The major differences are the SX40 has a much faster 'burst' rate 10 frames vs 3 but the sx40 limits the ISO on long shots (3+sec) to 100iso while the SX30 you have control on the ISO.

Also you can't get a printed copy of the SX40 manual (you can't even print the PDF file without "COPY" printed across every page). I went around and around with Canon on this attempting to get a copy for my father who is not computer literate, and discovered it was a corporate decision in Japan (to be 'eco-friendly') not to allow printed copies.

Here is a comparison of the two http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_sx40-review

BTW if you get either get a back up battery or two, but don't buy a Canon battery. They cost $70 vs $17 for a non Canon battery and they are made in China where the other brands (at least the ones I've bought are made in Japan-much more trustworthy in my book)

Go to Manualsink.com... You can get probably ANY manual you want and get it in an 8"x11" size.... About 20 bucks and worth every penny...

If you READ the title to this thread and the OP's original post, this thread was asking specifically for SX40 pictures and comments!!
Any other topic is "off subject".

They don't have one for the SX40 because of the word "copy" embedded in the PDF. But that is where I got a very nice printed copy for my SX30, cut to the page size the PDF file is formatted for, and spiral bound.

I do second your recommendation for those PDF manuals that haven't been 'sabotaged.' They are a lot cheaper in terms of time and effort and faster than doing it yourself.

Off subject....according to you? Seems like you're the only one that has a problem with helpful info being shared. Guess perhaps you're the forum police? Just lighten up, please. "Comments" include how an item under discussion stacks up with other cameras.
