.......photo where the object is about 1/4 to 1/2 mile away - or further even??? Thinking very seriously of getting one from the photos I've seen on here - most fairly close up. Want to see some that are faaaar away to get an idea of what I'm getting. I've gone to the "search" but none mention how far away an item is. Thanks.

Here are three... The first was taken at full 840mm and the heat was creating heat wave distortion..
I will try and find out what the mm was on the other two...
Don

The pier was about 2 miles away...

WOW!!! That pier was about 2 miles away???? I am like 90% ready to buy the SX40 but wanted a little more assurnace in getting a good camera. I love my XTi but after 5 years with it, it's time to move on. I think with your help in showing me something that was about 2 miles away puts me over the edge in getting one. I just needed that distant shot. Thank you very much donrent.

1 1/2 blocks away does the trick too. I'm convinced the SX40 is for me. Again - thank you

Here's one I took in Galveston Bay last month. It was very hot and very humid, which really shows up in the long zoomed photos. This ship was a good 1/2 mile away, maybe more.

I think you'll love the SX40 - I sure do. :

Thank you Carioca - this is what I was looking for. You and donrent both at least told the about distance away the object was and that's what I needed. 95% of the people on here who have one say they love them but I just needed that little assurance of distance. Thanks.

Good luck... That camera and lens is so good, that I'm amazed almost every time I use it.....

Did some measuring on my city map and the pier in #1 measured out to be 1 3/4 miles away, not two....

I have had my SX40 for seven months and love it to death. although I have a number of small point and shoots, as well as micro 4/3 cameras, I use this one more than all the others combined. In a recent post on Photography Blog, the author mentioned that the average price spent on a DSLR has gone up. Though he didn't say why, I suspect sales of entry DSLRs are losing out to bridge cameras. It is easy to see why

If I had bought my SX40 before I bought my T2i, T3i and 5 lenses; I would have more money to spend on other toys. I am impressed with my SX40 everytime I use it.

Heh heh heh soon we will have the SX 40 forum. No need to discuss the other going down history lane cameras.
Just kidding but I am looking forward to getting mine sometime next week.
Only question left will I sell my 60D outfit?

Thanks for the pictures Don

I have a serious question. I have a 580 ex ii flash with my 60D. The possible deal with the shop would relieve me of the flash as well. Will the SX 40 be able to use the features of the 580exii, like ETTL and also high speed sync?
Much appreciated

Another one to consider. Lumix FX200 w/LEICA 25-600mm lens, what is amazing is that it is a constant f2.8 lens. Imagine 600mm @ f.28. WOW. Price is $600. Only drawback.

Yepper, sure can.

For MANY times more than the $370 I paid for my SX40.

Yepper, sure can!
