Looking at the responses so far, there seems to be an issue with how far flung our members are even in California. I have another idea that would allow everyone to get together face to face without the logistical issues. I belong to a Mac computer user group that use to have monthly meetings. We had a similar problem with members who lived all over Orange County and the rising cost of our meeting location. We solved the problems by having our monthly meetings online using a Skype like (not Skype) service that allows us to video conference with an unlimited number of people. Everyone can see everyone else, we can screen share to illustrate demonstrations and the control monitor can block people who do not observe the rules if necessary, although we have never had to do that. As a side benefit, we have expanded our membership because people who have moved away from Orange County can now participate and we have attracted new members from all over the country. Of course, we already have that at UHH. What does everyone think?

You might want check out "meetup.com" as a means of organizing local meetings. I've participated in several local photo groups that use it for coffee shop/discussion meetings, critiques, lessons and to organize outings.

I'd suggest starting by searching what photo groups already exist in your area and looking into those.
You can't possibly meet the needs of everyone in a large area. So just worry about the most local and work with that.
As a side note, being in Silicon Valley, I found it interesting that there's a lot film photography being done by the "techies" here. I guess when you spend 12 hours a day working at a computer, the last thing you want to do is shoot digital and spend your hobby time sitting in front of a monitor, too!

We could meet anytime if a group or handful of folks were interested on a certain day. I sometimes go out with my camera club and it has been our leader and myself only at times.It's nice to be with other people sometimes.
