Curious to know what travel device do you use, to store and edit pictures, when traveling.. on an overseas trip I can easily take 8000 or more photos.. I use a mac 27 desktop at home with LR classic CC.. I used to use a lap top when traveling along with an external drive, but my apple laptop is a 2010 model and is not really functional anymore.. I shoot, primarily, with Canon 5dm4 so I use both SD and CF cards., I know I can buy another laptop and use it with an external travel drive to back up and edit when traveling, but would love something smaller.. like iPad ( so I can read with it , instead of my Kindle,, to help minimize electronics to carry along) but I can’t figure out how to download from both cards and store that many files on an iPad…I tried calling Adobe to help, but they couldn’t answer my questions…So I turn to you all, for any suggestions. It would be most appreciated!..Right now, all I can see is purchasing another lap top, and I really was hoping that was not the only solution… thx

Vacations are for fun however when we go, its usually for weeks at a time and and usually about 3 times a year.....but always take a lot of photos. I always travel with a very light ASUS 13" laptop (I-7 processor), personally despise tablets (Apple, Samsung, etc) since they're really not computers and besides, my wife carries her Samsung Tablet. I take numerous memory cards SD I & II only, no CF cards, and usually PP in the evening and only if nothing else is going on. Going on a 3-week cruise of Asia early next year, taking nothing more than the items I listed previously...camera, 2 lenses, a laptop and numerous cards. Although I might consider a Passport external drive if for some reason I need to store or backup photos on another device. Always travel as light as possible and take ONLY the electronics you need...unless work requires it....Good Luck

Your work flow sounds exactly as I envision mine to be ( it’s what I did when traveling with my now defunct laptop and external drive).. question.. when the images come back into LR classic, can you designate them to be ordered by “date shot”.. for me that helps with organizing long trips.. and how many gigs is on your iPad to store the files.. thx!

My ipad capacity is 256 gigs.

They physically place themselves in subfolders by date within a folder that I designated to receive them. That designated folder is on the same external drive where photos go that are downloaded directly to my computer while I'm home. Catalog-wise, they fold themselves into my regular LRClassic catalog so that they are sequential with everything else. And of course are subject to keywording and collections like everything else. I have not tried adding keywords while traveling but have read that keywording, like edits, will move back to your regular catalog when you bring them home.

The biggest difference to me from what I used to do with the laptop (and it is so nice not to have to drag that beast around) is the magic with Adobe Cloud, where the transition of the raw files, along with edits, happens more or less on its own. I start LR on my desktop, open LR on the ipad and go do something else, letting the two of them sort it out.

I use a RavPower WD-03 which is a portable self-powered wireless router and SD card reader. You can connect any USB device to the output side. I use a pair of 256 gb memory sticks for redundant backup, but you can also use a hard drive or any other USB client. I can launch a file copy session and monitor the progress using a smartphone, tablet or laptop. It has a 6000mAh battery which when fully charged can charge a phone 3 times. Best $40 I ever spent, and it is by far the most reliable smallest, lightest scalable backup solution I have yet to come across. And the cheapest.

I don't have a solution for your CF cards, but from reading this:

https://www.ravpower.com/p/ravpower-5200mah-filehub-plus.html
I have used the iPad for years with the adapter mentioned by sevral who have posted. The iPad allows the usual Apple iPhoto editing and iCloud storage. Never travel without
There may be a solution in there if you can attach a USB hub and a card reader to the iPad and I have traveled to some fairly remote area of SE Asia and Africa.

I usually keep the unexposed film in a large gallon baggie and the exposed film in another gallon baggie.

I try and travel light, one camera, one lens and a bag of film. (and a handful of lens wipes.)

My vacations are different. I do not schlep a bunch of stuff around with me nor do I spend time editing pictures at night. I go on vacation to have fun see and do different things. I have a D610 I take a lens. I cannot imagine taking 8,000 pictures on.....vacation.

But perhaps some of us go on very specific photography tours and it's not really a vacation at all and we know that. I have never taken 8000 photos as I try not to take any more than I want to go through on return but have often taken thousands of images. I don't go on "vacation," I go on photo trips.

I have a Dell latitude with 1TB solid state hard drive and a 14" screen. It is the same size as my I pad pro (Little thicker). I put a 256 solid state flash drive in and down load my pictures to this. Saving room on my computer.

When I get home I can put the pictures where ever I want

Barb, I just keep all the pics on memory cards and take enough of them. That's pretty easy these days.
I NEVER edit while traveling. It would be a WASTE of vacation time!!!

I had the same issues you have. I also use 27" iMacs at home and LR Classic and PS for editing. I too also tried taking a laptop when traveling and quickly discarded that because of the weight. I now only use extra SD and CF flash memory cards. I set my D800 to use the CF as the primary and SD as the backup. It cuts the weight way down and has proven to be very reliable. The only downside is that I can't edit during the trips, but I find that I have little time to do that anyhow.

Imho if you are taking 8000 pictures on a vacation you are spending too much tie behind the camera and not stopping to smell the roses.Enjoy what you paid all that money to see and take less pictures

I shoot RAW.. one of the other members sent a link to a B&H video that demonstrates how LR CC will connect and download thru the cloud to LR Classic, and store small files on the iPad ...that might be my solution.. thanks!.. your response was right along the same line...

So glad to see this camera again. I owned an Audio Visual company and in the 80's we had a number of these F3's. With a Nikon 35mm lens.
They were so reliable. We shot everything with this rig. I loved the camera but eventually traded up to buy other cameras. Some shows had
12 slide projectors and we had hundreds of slides. To me this camera was so much better then these over complicated cameras today.
I would set it up. Maybe aperture a 1/2 or 1 stop darker and just shoot. Or match the needle (?) is I remember right. We shot corporate
people candids all over the US. Never used a flash all natural light. Thanks for the post.

That depends on how long his vacations are. If he is gone for a month or more, that is a reasonable number.

I have a 17" laptop I take with me when traveling. Each evening I download from the computer chips to the laptop, do the same with the GPS log data and merge them (puts coordinates into the photo EXIFs). When I get home I copy the laptop contents to my desktop computer and subsequently post-process (Lightroom) and upload selected ones to Flickr.

The laptop has an SD card reader built in and I transfer the camera photos using that method into a new folder for each day of the trip. The photos remain organized by "day" until after I have done the PP on them--final organization takes place when I upload them to Flickr. The GPS information (and ID photos) greatly assist in grouping photos meaningfully.

I take lot of chips for storage. I can download to my S9+ and modify there or modify in camera to see any potential. I then transfer the original RAW/JPEG once I get home. Chips are relatively cheap and can serve as a backup even after transfer. Then one can go a buy the newer and even faster chips to put more photos on.
