Curious to know what travel device do you use, to store and edit pictures, when traveling.. on an overseas trip I can easily take 8000 or more photos.. I use a mac 27 desktop at home with LR classic CC.. I used to use a lap top when traveling along with an external drive, but my apple laptop is a 2010 model and is not really functional anymore.. I shoot, primarily, with Canon 5dm4 so I use both SD and CF cards., I know I can buy another laptop and use it with an external travel drive to back up and edit when traveling, but would love something smaller.. like iPad ( so I can read with it , instead of my Kindle,, to help minimize electronics to carry along) but I can’t figure out how to download from both cards and store that many files on an iPad…I tried calling Adobe to help, but they couldn’t answer my questions…So I turn to you all, for any suggestions. It would be most appreciated!..Right now, all I can see is purchasing another lap top, and I really was hoping that was not the only solution… thx

Apple makes a device with a Lightning connector at one end and an SD card reader at the other. Inexpensive and it works great. See B&H link below. I believe there is also a version for newer iPads that use a USB-type connector.

Your advice is spot on. I use my IPad Pro and USB connector that I purchased from Apple. I shoot Raw and this concept works great. I may even touch up a few photos to send to friends using LR on my IPad. I mostly download them back to my MacBook Pro via my external hard drive when back home.

Here is a card reader for iPad that will transfer from both sd and cf cards.

Thank you for your quick replys! So, with 8000 photos, can you store them all on an iPad???..I am told that LR mobileCC can transfer to Classis CC when I return..but wasn't sure how it works, and what edits hold in the process

I travel with an ASUS i7 laptop and portable drive. I put the laptop in my suitcase when flying. I also have a backpack that can store the laptop. It is not light, but for me, it is a perfect solution.

I shoot Raw plus JPEG. Used an iPad in Europe for 5 weeks and it worked perfectly. Wireless transfer to the device each night. Carried my iPad, 6D, with a 24 to 105 lens, 2 batteries a charger and 6 SD 32GB cards 1 64GB and a Pelican card holder. We traveled with just one carry-on each. With my camera in the carry-on and a CPAP and clothing/toiletries I was just under the 10k limit on the most restrictive airline. We had one roller bag for the wife and a backpack for me. The backpack nested onto the top of the roller so I was able to tow both. Not a problem except stairs and canal bridges in Venice. We pegged the fun-o- meter each day so I just transferred to the device without any editing as I was too worn out at night to do so. Trip of a lifetime.

I just carry a lot of large memory cards and swap cards but I am never gone for more than 2-3 days.
Here is an article on various things to do: https://toomanyadapters.com/backup-photos-without-laptop/
Google "external hard drive for travel without a computer" I got a lot of results.

The problem with an iPad is how much memory do you have to dedicate to images vs apps/books....and do you shoot JPG or raw? Raw's will eat up memory fast for sure....

I would think that you would want something like a WD Passport wireless device that can store your images and allow a tablet to access them, so you are not wasting space in your iPad's memory for images.

BTW - With Lightroom CC (Mobile) your images can be kept in the cloud (Meaning you need access to the internet to get them to the cloud)

Might be the perfect thing... card reader built in, can connect to devices over built in WIFI to allow access to images stored on the device... no memory issues for the iPad & lots of room for raw or JPG images....

A small Microsoft Surface Go. I have an extra 256GB micro SD card in the expansion slot. Use a card reader in the usb-C slot. Just started using this device. So far, I like it better than a tablet because it is a real computer. My problem with the Apple devices is that often you may not add extra storage cards--they promote the cloud--but that is not great for large transfers or in places with poor or no connections. I downloaded an Affinity photo editing program onto the little Surface Go. It is really not much bigger than a tablet. It gets about 4-5 hours of battery life--not as good as a tablet.

I shot over 1500 pictures on a trip to London, Ireland and Scotland in 17 days. Saved to IPad Pro (Cloud). Moved them to external memory when I returned home. The card reader worked flawlessly. Downloaded every night starting with clean cards the next day. I have used this process for several years.

The iPad Pro is available with up to 1TB of storage and runs about $1600 to $1800 depending on screen size (11 to 12.9 inches). When traveling I use an older iPad and only download images I may want to post on social media. I usually use the Canon Connect app to view photos on the camera and download the ones I may want to use. I wait til I get home to download all the photos to my desk top. I shoot both raw and JPEG and do not pp the raw til I get home.

Yes, you can connect the two Lightrooms like you suggest. It is a new enough workflow that not many, including me, get it yet.

B&H hosted a session explaining it. Try watching this: https://livestream.com/bheventspace/events/8478684

I use a RavPower WD-03 which is a portable self-powered wireless router and SD card reader. You can connect any USB device to the output side. I use a pair of 256 gb memory sticks for redundant backup, but you can also use a hard drive or any other USB client. I can launch a file copy session and monitor the progress using a smartphone, tablet or laptop. It has a 6000mAh battery which when fully charged can charge a phone 3 times. Best $40 I ever spent, and it is by far the most reliable smallest, lightest scalable backup solution I have yet to come across. And the cheapest.

I don't have a solution for your CF cards, but from reading this:

https://www.ravpower.com/p/ravpower-5200mah-filehub-plus.html

There may be a solution in there if you can attach a USB hub and a card reader to the input side. I don't think this is possible with the WD-03.
