I really love all three of the monarch images but would guess that the judges might prefer number three, just from some comments made on butterflies I have posted, but if you love butterflies and flowers how can anyone not like all three?

I like the Butterfly in the 3rd photo, but perhaps it could be lightened up a bit to bring out more color in the butterfly. No. 2 is also good.

I'm thinking of entering a local photo contest...
In this contest you can enter many different categories, but only one per category.
I'm trying to choose between these photo's.
I can only enter one of the Butterfly photo's but not really sure which one of these three I want to submit.
The last photo I'am going to enter, I think it is interesting.
These have to be printed out as 8x10 photograph's.

I agree with Jerry....b3

Probably not helping, but I like Butterfly #1.

The 2nd butterfly shot, but needs cropping - 1" off top, about 2" off left side & 1/2" off the bottom.
As for the face of the statue, it's someones else art work & any competent judge will reject it.

No, it is actually from a photo that I took of a statue from the place that is having the photo contest. I had taken a photo of the statues head and just made a very tight crop of the face. The place that is having this contest, one of the requirements is that the subject matter of the photograph must have been taken on their property, and this photo fits one of the categories they have. Thanks for your ideas on the butterfly photo. Tom

Agreed. B1 does not emphasize the Monarch at all. In B3, nothing competes for the focus of the picture with the butterfly.

The last photo is really somebody else's art and some judges will downgrade the image.

#2 lets you focus your attention on the butterfly which is the main subject, the flowers are secondary and beautifully out of focus.

The statue is very dramatic. For the butterflies, I prefer #2 because it shows the butterfly in its environment with the background not overly busy as it is in #1. Interestingly, I'm not very excited about last year's winners. Good luck, Tom!
