In this case it was easy. There was an X chiseled in the rock. However, very close to the edge of a 600+ foot cliff.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as cooperative as I'd have liked. Complete cloud cover and great lack of contrast. Thus, I'll be going back to try again.

Bob, understand the lack of sun but I love the detail leading up to the "set up".

How far did you have to carry the gear to reach that point?
Good story line. Makes me wonder who cut the "X".
Looking forward to the photo when you get it.---

Kinda like the "photo point" signs at Disney?

Larry, just a bit over 100 yards. Though that is over a rocky terrain. The real point of interest is the location is about 10-20 feet from the edge of a sheer cliff with a 600 foot drop. There was a great deal of paying attention to where one steps.

Considering this photo by Ansel Adams, one can only imagine who chiseled the X there.

Thanks for taking a look and commenting.

Longshadow, you have a good point there. This is the second time I've been to Canyon De Chelly. Once I set the tripod on the first trip, I noticed an X chiseled in the rock directly below the center post. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-468540-1.html It makes one wonder about the X carvings.

Thanks for looking and commenting with the Disney reference.

Taking a stand is a good thing Bob. However, this appears to be a cautious one and the inscribed X happens to be the evidence. The B&W, "The Photograph' is an excellent finish and falls within your standards, but 'The Setup' is the one that has my attention. Be safe on your photographic journey and I look forward to the results of your return visit.

Maybe the "X" is where some guy's friend fell from, a warning, don't stand there...
Ya never know.....

Excellent series, Bob and really appreciate how you approached taking your photos...we need more like this example. Doesn't get any better than Canyon de Chelly!

Wonderful capture, Bob! Intimidating array of gear for this amateur.

The photograph is very nice; you brought out that level of detail that B/W -- when well done -- can bring to the table.
