That big ole boy will be suffocated way before it hits the stomach. Fantastic nature action shots CPO! Few and far between have ever seen something like this. Out of their habitat, but still can hunt down a meal.

OMG, was that a rat?

Actually, “vole” is another name for field mouse and other rodents frmom small to rat size. They are generally plump and have a shorter tail than a rat. I think the prey in this instance fits that description. jak

I was watching this guy for a few minutes, didn't know he had his eye on lunch so I missed the strike. These were taken with just a 140mm zoom so pretty severely cropped. Down loads might help some.

Good job! You sure made the most of that opportunity.

I've watched them eat voles, but nothing as big as this. I hunted up one of the videos that I, and some others on here, have seen. Here is the link:

Watched one eat a 6 inch soft shell turtle one time. He beat it till it was mush, then down the hatch. His neck became 6 inches wide but got it down.

Thanks, Swamp-Cork. This guy was hanging around the ground squirrel burrows, but that's not a ground squirrel. Might be a vole, I think it's too big for a mole.

Looks like a rat to me. Pretty big and then there's the tail. And a vole, at least in my part of the world, is no bigger than a mouse, about the size of a man's thumb. That thing is at least six inches long.
