My credit card said that it could probably withstand the expense of either one, but I wanted to get the take from others who have used them. I've read the specs, but was hoping for some hands-on experience. So, if you had the choice, which one would you hang around your neck?

I’ll bite first. I shoot with an 800 on occasion and 7200 as my daily camera. After a bit more than a year, I find the 7200 more than capable and fitting for my experience level with shooting mostly birds. Having said that, and single card slot aside, had the 7500 been out, when I purchased the 7200, I have no doubt I would have gotten it. Were I you, and the DX format is what you are interested in, I would look hard at the D500. Good luck with your choice.

I had a 7100 that went bad on me, so I went looking to replace it. I narrowed my choice down to the 7500, the 7200 and the 750. I chose the 7500. Other than one less card slot (I use 32GB cards), the specs on the 7500 won me over. The 7200 was just too much like the 7100.

I wouldn't buy either one personally because my need and want is else where. Now if you make me choose between the 2? I would pick the D7200 for about 2/3 the price of the D7500.

Since the D7500 is not the successor to the D7200, what is it?! Well, as I read it, Nikon decided to make a crossover, a hybrid if you will, of their top two crop frame cameras. Combine many of the features of the D7200 with many of the features of the D500 and what do you get? The D7500.
I personally own a D7200 and a D500 and if I had the choice between the D7200 and the D7500 and cost wasn't a major factor, I'd strip away the 7 and get a D500. It is that good of a camera and it's not really all that expensive.

Sounds to me like you are basing your decision not on product knowledge, but on cost. Not really what the OP was going for but there certainly is logic to it.

That would not be a good compromise. Yes, the D750 is full frame, but full frame isn't everything and the D750 doesn't have the functionality of the D500. Now, if all the OP was interested in is portrait photography then I may agree with you.

Let me ask you how much of a different in term of image quality if you do a careful testing? Is the D7500 image better? I doubt that. I know it's faster and has better focusing ability but I don't care much for those. I don't care for the D7200 2 cards slots. I do use a lot of AI lenses yet I don't miss the AI coupling on the D7500 either. I can shoot fine meterless. I would pick the D7500 if it delivers definitely better images than the D7200.

While one can trust or distrust DXO mark but they gave both cameras the same score (87 for the D7200 and 86 for the D7500). The D7500 is only slightly better in low light and slightly worse in other categories. The controls layout of the 2 cameras are basically the same. There is not advantage like that of the D7xxx vs the D5xxx with the 2 control dials vs 1. Oh yeah the D7500 does have the tiltly screen but that's only good for shooting in live view which I never do. I do use the LCD for review but in that case one don't need tilty screen and one can turn the camera any way. In my opinion the tilty screen makes it less reliable.

My experience has been with a D80 and then/now with the 7200. I don't have any first-hand knowledge about the 7500 or the other models that have been listed in the other replies.
I've been very satisfied with the quality and performance of the 7200, and I would recommend it, based on my amature (somewhat past beginner status), but enthusiastic photography journey.

I had a D7200 and was impressed with it, with the images it produced. I mostly use the 18-140 lens and occasionally the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8VR. I can readily recommend the D7200 as a solid performer. If one insists on professional quality images, then they should be looking at a more pro-level camera. I have no experience with the D7500, but I'd likely opt for the D7200 over the 7500. However--I have to agree on the D500. It is the best, flagship APSC camera offered by Nikon, and justifiably so. It does all things well and is well-suited for bird and wildlife photography. Again, I have never used the D500, but I have done some research on it, and based on that and the comments here on UHH, the D500 is the camera to get, assuming ones budget will allow it. It make sense, especially if one already has a collection of DX lenses. I suppose this doesn't directly answer the OP's question, but it's what I would consider were I in the market for a high end APSC DSLR. Oh, and cost does enter into the equation. When buying a camera, one does need to consider the cost along with their needs and desires. Sometimes in order to get a camera that will do everything someone wants, they need to either spend the extra money, or throttle back the expectations and desires.

Everybody has their own reasons for choosing between these two cameras. Even though I got my D7200 before the D7500 came out, it (d7200) would still be my first choice. After starting with a D1x many years ago, anything smaller needs a grip to feel comfortable. I also appreciate the extra batteries in the grip. The D7500 does not accept a grip.

I D7500 has pluses that owners will point out. You should be happy with images from either.

I have both. Just recently got the D7500. The reason was a faster camera for kid soccer, primarily. I usually use both at a match. I find the D7500 has better focus acquisition. A bit better high ISO JPEG engine. I like the group autofocus option. I also like the two different basic jpeg settings. Thus I would likely opt for the D7500, but for most uses the D7200 is also excellent.
