I was upgrading from a d3400. I had pretty much determined that the D7200 was going to be my camera of choice. I shoot wildlife, mostly birds and BIF. After watching the youtube review by Steve Perry:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpIW0_0MQEg

I chose to purchase a used D7500. I am VERY happy!!

This video not only reviewed the D7500 but compared it directly to the D7200 AND the D500. I thought that the combination of features on the D7500 was, for me, better than the D7200 and fit into my price point better than the D500 (dream camera!!)

Hope this helps

I'd go for the 7200. I have one and love it. The second card is very important to me. I shoot jpg to card 1, raw and videos to card 2.

My credit card said that it could probably withstand the expense of either one, but I wanted to get the take from others who have used them. I've read the specs, but was hoping for some hands-on experience. So, if you had the choice, which one would you hang around your neck?

Neither I would be happy with what I have. How much greater will a new camera enhance anything you have already done?

I went from the venerable Nikon D90 to the D7500 after a lot of research. I have had the camera a year and it has proven to be an excellent choice. I compared photos taken at an air show and the D7500 photos were significantly better. I mostly shoot landscape, trains, cars, old architecture and an occasional model shoot. The D7500 offers so much I ended up buying a third party book to learn all the camera has to offer.

The choice is up to you. If you shoot landscape, family or street the D7200 is all you'll ever need. If you shoot sports or wildlife the D7500 with it's higher frame rate and improved AF would be the best choice. I've used a D7200 shooting wild life for several years with no complaints. Just something to think about.

You are going to get a lot of advice. I have shot Nikon for over 50 years. You may want to look at this comparison.
https://cameradecision.com/compare/Nikon-D7200-vs-Nikon-D7500

For me, the biggest factor is this, the D7200 has the exceed 4 processor, the D7500 has the exceed 5 processor. The exceed processor is the brain of the camera, the higher the number, the more advanced the processor.
There are currently Christmas deals on both camera's. The following is only one example of these deals.

Good luck on your decision and keep on shooting until the end.

I thought this was a repeat, because someone recently posted that he made the choice - in favor of the D7500. Check some comparison sites and see what appeals to you more.

The 7500 has a tilty screen. If you’re shooting low and don’t want to lie on your belly or shooting over the heads of other parents, that screen will make a difference to you. Others have discussed IQ, so I won’t

A lot depends on what your shooting preference is. If its action and birds on the wing, then the D7500, it will focus faster than the D7200 and also has a bigger buffer. The D7200 on the other hand has 2 card slots and a 24.2 megapixel sensor compared to 20.9 on the D7500. Overall you can expect slightly better image quality out of the D7200. If I was in your shoes, I would lean towards the D7500.

Have fun!

Tell credit card to get $ 200.00 more and get D750.

The D750 (FX) is a great camera (for the price), a close friend of mine bought one last Summer. I've handled it. Great, and with a Nikkor FX AF 24-120mm f/4 Lens. Low light ability as a FF blows away my Pentax APS-C cameras (though the K-5 gives little noise).

Oh, from my own reading anyway, the D500 (DX) would be great for BIF. As you can see from many replies, people generally recommend what they have, I'll recommend what I don't have if I feel that is what you need or want.

I don't have any experience with the D7500. That being said, I've used a D7200 for a few years. It's been great. I used it recently at an air show and have some really good shots with it.

You make a good point, traderjohn. The camera that I want to replace is a Nikon D3100. It's a14mp camera in excellent condition. It takes great photos and I seriously doubt one can tell the difference between it and a 24mp 11x14 hanging on a wall. However, I'd like to move up to a newer camera for the same reason most people want to buy a newer car, when at the same time the old one still runs great. Plus, there are some really good prices to be had due to the shopping season. But to be perfectly honest, I simply want one. (Let's call it treating myself to an early Christmas.) My photo skills and knowledge are semi-advanced and I'd like a camera that is much the same. At any rate, thank you for replying to my inquiry. Let's hope the holiday season is one of thankfulness for our blessings.

Not the same reason I want to buy a new car. When I buy a new car my old one either doesn't run any more of it would cost way too much to fix it. I never buy a new car if my old one still work. In this case your D3100 still works like new.

My old 3.4mp Minolta still works great too. So, ok. With so many replies, I think it's time to put this topic to rest. Thank you, all : )

Hey PB,

In comparing specs if the loss of the second card slot isn't a big deal to you and the D7500's $350 higher price tag (body only) it has a higher frame rate, higher native ISO range, addition of group AF, latest Expeed 5 vs. Expeed 4 processing engine and a deeper buffer.

They share the same number of focus points (51, 15 cross type), the 7200 has the sync speed advantage for flash at 1/320th vs. 1/250th and 24 MP vs. 20+MP (you'd be hard pressed to see the difference here, personally I don't get hung up on megapixels), rear monitor 1.23 million dots vs. the D7500's .922 million dots and better average battery life (1,100 vs. 950 shots), along with more custom settings available (54 vs. 41) than the D7500.

Either way it still boils down to needs and money, your choice. For me I'd go with the D7200 and put the extra $350 towards some good glass. Good luck and happy shooting.
