Then there were those who didn't come back. I had a very small graduating class in the mid-sixties, 58 people total. Six of us eventually went into the military, two drafted, four volunteers of which I was one. Of the six of us, five have their names on the VietNam Memorial Wall. Four were brought back to their families for burial, one was captured alive after a helicopter shoot-down and is still MIA. His dogtags were found in a "junk box" of a street market in Cambodia about ten years ago. It was a war, and I hold no bitterness except for the politicians, who in the 1990's, closed the books on MIA's and arbitrarily proclaimed them all to be dead. I feel he, and many others, were abandoned for the resumption of trade relations with VietNam. That is why I could never vote for John Kerry or John McCain.

I came back because I was in crypto and not in a combat-related position. I think about them sometimes and wonder if I really did my part.

Has anyone ever seen the movie with Gene Hackman, Bat21?
About a plane shot down and the navigator was the only survivor. The movie is about the rescue of the navigator. One of my dearest friends, her Uncle was on that plane, and his body has never been recovered. He was listed as MIA for about 7-8 years then his status was changed to presumed KIA due to the length of time he'd been missing... so sad...

God Bless all of our troops, their friends and families and those who stayed behind to keep the home fires burning for the return of our service men and women... Proud to be an American

I would like to honor my husband who served 26 years in the military. 1974-2001 USAF Retired Senior Master Sgt. He started out as Avionics Technician (radar troop) did this for 4 years then became a Flight Engineer on the C130 Hercules.. workhorse of the Air Force.. His career was different from most as we spent only 4 years away from Little Rock AFB.. Well at least I did he was gone a lot, the 4 years we were at Yokota Air Base Japan near Tokyo.. he was gone most of the time here too..

Our oldest daughter went into the Air Force as an officer after graduating college.. spent 8 years in service and then got out to have her family.. she did a tour in Iraq..

Her husband is also an officer in the Air Force Intelligence Dept.. He has been to both Iraq and Afganistan...

Our youngest daughter went into the Air Force as an elisted airman.. spent 6 years in service and got out before having to go to Iraq.. coward no, her husband also serves in the Air Force as a C130J Loadmaster. He (like my husband did)spends more time gone from home as duty calls... someone needed to be home for the 2 children they had... She now works in the Civil Service at the squadron her husband is attached to in Germany.. He has also been to Iraq and Afganistan...

We also have a nephew who is an officer in the Marine Corps squad leader in Afganistan.. he got to come home a little early because of the death of his father.. He is now stationed in the states...

During Vietnam era my cousins husband served as a Medic there...

My Dad was in the Army, My husbands Dad was in the Marine Corps, both went to Korea came home safe... both are deceased now.

Do I respect anyone who served you bet I do.. THANK YOU to all who served and thank your families for keeping the home fires burning for you....
I would like to honor my husband who served 26 yea... (show quote)

Awww man-n-n there are some awesome postings here. Proof that no matter how many years have passed by, no matter who servedwhere and when, whether we know each other or not, we still are family.

I'm on the USS Damato DDE-871 group, and in our bunch there are a few AFs, and the rest are tins can sailors. We are from all over. I served aboard her '59 - '61 and now live in Québec...because on a middie cruise I met my future wife here in Q-City. We have another fellow from the UK. In 1961 Salazar hijacked a cruise ship, the Santa Maria and there were 38 American passengers aboard and we chased her through the Carib and down to Recife, Brazil, and in doing so I became a Shellback and paid highly for this ''medal'' of having crossed the Equator. Ray, the fellow from the UK was aboard a Portugese destroyer and they too were deployed for the same reasons. Finally it al ended in Recife. The story does not end there. Ray found us through the Internet almost 50 years later and one time he held a mini-reunion in England and some ofthe guys and their wives attended.

Are we brothers? When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the whole gang stood up to support me.

Last July I finally met up with an ex-shipmate in Norfolk, VA and we had coffee together and two days later, we had a family breakfast and that breakfast took three hours and those people at IHOP were extremely glad to see us leave LOL

Remember that song, ''Lean on me when you're not strong ....?'' That sure does set well with the Damato gang.

I signed up on a "kidde cruise" under 18 years old, suppose to get out when you turn 21. Navy sent to to Electrician's school after boot camp, 48 years later still an electrician, would not change a thing(well maybe a couple)! Spent 12 years in, traveled on some fine "Cruise Ships", no a/c and in the South China Sea, hot!
Thanks again to all who have served and are serving!

I thought it would be of interest to the Veterans who are members of UHH to have a place to post what Service they were in , what there MOS (Mode Of Service) was ,and when and where they served. My guess is there are quite a few Veterans both young and "seasoned" that use the site.
Suggest we try to keep politics out of the thread. We all served our Nation and that is our common bond.

All Veterans of all Eras both men and women tell us who you were with and where you served.

I served in the US Navy 1969-1972 as a Gunners Mate. Did a tour in Nam as a twin .50 cal bow gunner on PBR's (Patrol Boats, River) '69-'70. My Unit was River Division 594, part of Task Force 116. Most of our ops were up along the Cambodian boarder. Finished up doing sea duty on The USS Ticonderoga, an old WWII vintage flat top. I made E-3 twice. Adherence to Military Discipline was not my strong points.

God Bless America and those who defend Her ,Past, Present and Future.

OK who's next?

USAF 1966-86, split about half and half flying and R&D. Two tours in SEA. I'm really surprised (and gratified) at the number of Vietnam-era old farts who have responded to this thread.

Last flight, 6 Jun 86, Eglin AFB, FL
