I also wish i had a second as a back up. Then i would not have to keep switching lens.

I have heard that the focus system on this body is slow on this body. Can anyone clear this up for me. I have a chance to get one new in the box from a friend of mine who won this in a raffel who don't know which end of it to look thru. If I don't want it then he will sell it on eBay. I can get it for peanuts.if all it will do is frustrate me then I don't want it.
Thanks in advance for the feedback
if you can get it for peanuts...grab it.
If you can get it for peanuts I have a whole assortium. Dry roasted, salted, chilli, salt n vinegar not to mention the cashews.

I have a 5D Mk II. Absolutely love it. I looked at buying a Mk III recently, and determined it was not worth the money to me. So, I am actively looking for another 5D Mk II.
If you don't buy this from your friend, let me know and I will be plum happy to buy it. . .just to keep my other one company, don't you know!
Can't see any plums in our fruit bowl so if this is the currency used I will have to decline.
You may be confusing auto-focus speed with burst rate. The 5D mk ii shoots at an impressive 3.9fps but the 7D beats everything at 8fps.
I have never been troubled by slow auto-focus when using a decent lens such as Canon's own 24-105mm f4L IS USM. The USM stands for Ultra Sonic Motor. It gives super fast and near silent auto-focus.
Some third party and even Canon lenses, such as their 18-135mm f4-5.6 IS don't have fast focus motors and will of course seem much slower. In this case blame the lens not the camera.
The EOS5D mkii so exceeds just about every other camera on the market with full frame sensors (on a bang for the buck basis) that you'd be bonkers not to snatch it out of your foolhardy friends hand. As for it being too good for a beginner! Don't worry, the learning curve is pretty steep and you will never EVER need to upgrade.
By the way, some people have all the luck. The best I ever won in a raffle was a crappy tea set.
i did sell mine because of slow autofocus...........but i would not have known it was slow if i didn't also have a 7d......then it drove me nuts. i had 2 canon L glass when i had that body.
just remember cassettes sound fine if you didn't have dvd's playing at the same time.
i bought my 5dmk2 before i had the 7d.
i did sell the 5d....and i miss the full frame.
am looking for the final full frame replacement. i will have a full frame, just not sure which yet.
What do you guys want to photograph? Usain Bolt on speed?
I can't think of any scenario where the 5D mk ii would let you down speed wise.
If you don't want. It send it to me.
It is the slow auto focus (not frame rate) that people tend to slate on the 5d MKII but like I said I never noticed it bad appart from low light none contrasty subjects.
Like mooseeyes said It is an excellent camera.

I have both the 7D and 5D MII. For sports (football, baseball, diving, basketball, volley ball, etc.) the 7d is just better, faster.
For low light the MII is two stops better. I still like the 5D MII.

I like my 5dm2, the 5dm3 is faster. I carry both in the field and don't notice a real difference. I know the 5dm3 focus faster but I've never had a problem trading between each camera.
In low light there is a significant difference because the 5d has a better system.
Is the 5dm3 worth it? I was lucky, I bought mine from someone who wanted something else at a great deal, otherwise I would have bought another 5dm2. The 5dm3 is my low light camera. really don't care for most of the features except for the better focusing system and the low light.

For sport the 1.6 crop factor must be a terrific bonus too with the 7d. When I bought my 5D mk ii I gave my 40D to my daughter and though I'd never give the new one up I do sometimes miss the extra reach I had. On the other hand with more than 21M pixels it also no problem to crop an image to get the image I want. Shame I can't get the wildlife to come a little closer (;<)

This had been discussed endlessly on UHH. You don't have any more reach with a crop frame. It's a cropped picture. If you crop the 5d you'll get basically the same photo.
I just got a 5dm3 but I shot sports for three years with a 5dm2. I grew up with a 4x5 speed graphic. I rarely use high frame rates. I guess it was years of leaning to anticipate action. The 5dm2 gave me great low light ability.
Get a 300mm and a 1.5 or 2x extender for wildlife. The f/4 is affordable.
I like the image quality of the 5dm2 and like some of the features on the 7d. So Canon invented the 5dm3. However, I've been very successful with the 5dm2.
However, I remember looking at a friends lcd on his crop frame and wondering why he had a closer looking photo than I had then I remember if I cropped mine it would look the same. It gets me everytime.

In my own clumsy way I think that's what I was trying to express. The price and therefore value for money factor makes the mk ii 5D unbeatable. Even against the mk iii which in the UK costs about 50% more.
I'll eventually get a longer L series lens and or an extender. A 300mm f4 would just about do it but for now I'm more than happy with what I've got.
Thank you for all the input. I currently own a 20D , 40D, 7D , and after a phone call will have a 5dMKII. I do have L glass. 28-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. ( yes there is a 28-70 2.8 ). Now if I had the time to use them. Winter is comming and then work will slow down. Thanks all
