Since we moved to Ellijay, this sharp shinned hawk or his/her close relative has been a visitor migrating in both the spring and the fall. They are uniquely designed for flying within the forest chasing song birds, squirrels and other small prey. He/she has never caught a bird in my yard, but is very intimidating nonetheless! Most of the time she/he sits in the branches obscured from view. Once in a while I get a reasonably good shot.

Think of all the money you are saving in bird feed. A couple of Cooper's have been hanging around my block and feeders I had to fill daily or even more often can now go 3-5 days sometimes.

Beautiful image. He is one mean looking bird.

He certainly strikes fear in most of the song birds. The blue jays give him a hard time, but he pretty much ignores them.

Good point. My son was chasing a Cooper's in his yard yesterday. He concluded he needed a longer, faster lens.
