A visitor both welcomed and not so ...

Since we moved to Ellijay, this sharp shinned hawk or his/her close relative has been a visitor migrating in both the spring and the fall. They are uniquely designed for flying within the forest chasing song birds, squirrels and other small prey. He/she has never caught a bird in my yard, but is very intimidating nonetheless! Most of the time she/he sits in the branches obscured from view. Once in a while I get a reasonably good shot.

Excellent shot of a (very likely male) sharp-shinned hawk!
(...and where is Ellijay?)

Thank you, the bokeh is the result of a Canon 500mm lens plus a 1.4 teleconverter. It really flattens out the background.

I think it is a male, but it is bloody hard to be sure. Thanks for your comment. Ellijay is 1.5 hours north of Atlanta in the Smokey Mountain foothills close to the NC/TN border. Not Alaska, but a not unreasonable substitute.
