I have a Nikon D700 that is up for sale, US model. I am the original owner. It is in excellent condition. It includes an extra battery as well as the accessory battery grip. Would be happy to negotiate a good deal with you.

Looking at getting an old camera - Nikon D200 or 300.

I have never bought anything on Ebay.

Most gear seems unrated. Some sellers allow return, some not. Descriptions are often internally inconsistent.

Seems to me that buying used via B&H, Adorma or KEH (possibly others - if so whom?) would be best way to do this so as to have some idea of what one is getting with the potential for return.

Looks like this route costs a bit more, but seems worth it to me.

Comments, thoughts, opinions

Thanks

Agreed. I would add I buy from ebay vendors who sell what I am buying, (eg. in this case cameras and lenses) and who have sold a number of these items in the past. If a person as a 99%+ rating and the negative reviews are trivial that's also good. Be sure to read the description and that it says the item is in proper working order. If it is not, Paypal will refund your money plus shipping both ways. If the vendor doesn't state the item is in proper working condition, don't buy it. If you need to return something, do it through Paypal.

Ebay is the best way to save $$ and lose the middle man. Buy from someone only with 100% feedback, read the description and if it comes to you and it is not to that description they have to return your $ and pay your shipping both ways even if they don't take returns. Ebay is best if you follow this formula!

All of the well known dealer recommendations that folks here have suggested are fine. Depending on where you are located there may be a local dealer or even a second-hand shop or pawnbroker who may have something interesting that you can actually handle and examine before you make the purchase. Over the years, I have found good deals in theses situations. It's surprising what's is out there but it's a hit and miss situation- you can do well if you know your gear and price points.

I also watch out for local folks who are adverting in newspapers, buy and sell publications and on sites like Kijiji and other online buy and sell resources. I have found that many folks buy a good camera, oftentimes top-of-the line stuff and then decide they just don't have the talent or patience to maxamize its use or just get disgruntled with the hobby and want to cut their losses and get rid of the gear. I have even purchased good stuff form folks who attempted to go professional and gave up in a relatively short time. Sadly, some times there is a family disposing of gear that had belonged to a photographer who has passed away.

I am not suggesting that you should not consider a reputable dealer but sometimes a little local research pays off. As long as you know what you are looking for and how to assess the condition of the gear, you may find something that fits you requirements and your budget.

Worth a try?

I recently purchased two pieces of used equipment from Roberts Camera. Both arrived within 3 days, in better condition than rated, and are functioning perfectly-with a 180 day warranty

I had never heard of them but a search for the flash I wanted brought them to my attention. i found this forum containing great reviews- it is a few years old, but I have experienced the same level of service that is reflected here:

YMMV

If you are interested in a Nikon D300, I have a very pristine one including the original box with several extra memory cards, an extra battery, and charger. I also have 1 or 2 popular books about using the D300 that would be included or the body only if you wish.

This way you would be purchasing from a fellow Hedgehog member and photo enthusiast instead of an Ebay unknown that could be pawn shop, stolen camera, or one found at a garage sale and flipped for a quick buck.

Price for all items listed without shipping, please.
