A beautiful photo Jack, with an interesting perspective!
As a lifelong resident of Minnesota, I hope you enjoyed our "North Shore". I think itโ€™s the best coastal photo drive in the
US. California and Maine are great but the North Shore of Lake Superior on Highway 61 is VERY user friendly to tourists
because of all the public access areas. There are so many parking areas, with picnic tables, clean restrooms etc that are close to magnificent vistas and waterfalls. Split Rock Lighthouse, (that one can actually climb up in) is a great photo
opportunity to photograph the gorgeous shoreline of the worlds largest lake. I hope you also enjoyed the quaint little
towns along the shore and you were treated friendly.

This is one of my two minute exposures taken from the breakwater at Grand Marais on the Lake Superior North Shore. I took several 2-3 minute exposures at that location and found during PP that there was some very slight camera movement on about half of them. I learned that it is necessary to minimize the tripod leg extensions even tho I was using a good medium weight tripod. Expensive lesson but a good one never-the-less. It was all I could do to carry my camera and tripod on the rocks, much less weights to hang on the tripod.
This is one of my two minute exposures taken from ... (show quote)

Why not a mesh bag (easily home-made and easy to carry)? Seemed to have a good source for weight to add to the mesh bag.

Probably a good idea for many, but with my bad left ankle, bad right knee, and not the best footing, I wasn't able to carry anything else. Further, there are no loose rocks there to put into the bag even if I had one, I would have had to carry them in. When possible, I simply hang my camera bag from the tripod if necessary.

Thanks Jeff. My wife and I love Minnesota, especially Duluth and the North Shore, and have been there several times in the last 20 years or so. Also spent a week in Stillwater a couple of years ago. We have stayed at the Blue Fin twice and once at the Lutsen Resort, great places to stay. People are always friendly up there. We have also stayed in Duluth and Two Harbors and made a few day trips from there up the shore. Did the Gunflint Trail clear to the end one year. Did the rail trip from Duluth to Two Harbors. Also made it up to Thunder Bay on one trip. I always stop at Split Rock each trip looking for that "perfect" photo (big waves, stormy sky, etc) from the shoreline but have yet to find it. I always recommend it to others who have never been up there. I'll try to post a few more pics from our last trip.

Very nice picture. I'm wondering if you could have captured the same effect with less than two minute exposure. That might have lessened the camera shake.

Thanks for checking in Guyserman. Based on past experience, 30 seconds would have probably been enough, but I was just wanting to try something longer to catch more waves. I had not anticipated the camera movement tho. About half of my shots had no camera movement but on the one shot I thought had the most potential, there was movement.
