A casual awareness of your surroundings is better than a firearm. I’ve been to the projects years ago. The kids are super polite decent kids. I’ve been to Englewood when there’s been running gun fights. So yep, know your surroundings. Loop area and north is Great. Plenty to see and do. Have a beer at the Billy Goat Tavern. Say Hi to Jeff for me. Tell him the last of the two survivors says hi. He will know.

I’ll be sure to stop by Billy Goat Tavern and have a beer.

I will be visiting Chicago next weekend. I was what lenses to bring. I own a 18-55mm kit lens, a 55-250 lenses and a 100-400 lens.
I’m going to rent a Tokina 11-20 f2.8 and Canon 18-135 mm lens.

Any thoughts about my choices that I’m renting.

Probably the lenses that you currently favour?

I don't know how inspiring these might be, but if you're looking to see what others have done in Chicago, check these out: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157635030487917/. In 2005 I rode the El and got some interesting photos there:

I've got one, but it's highly unlikely that the OP will need 400mm in the city unless he wants close-ups of clock towers and such. For cityscapes usually wider is better.

This lens also goes down to 18 which plenty wide. The versatility this offers is just what is needed for a shoot in a city. You do understand it covers everything from 18 to 400. It’s the should not be discounted just because it offers a 400 option.

I’d love to have those lenses but I’m on a limited budget. And I’m a she. This will be the first time, I’ve done any urban photography so I’ll be out of my comfort zone. But I have a video series on Travel Photography thru Creative Live. I’m going to check google map for pictures others have taken to get some inspiration.

My best advice is to travel light. Walking around a city, cameras and lenses start to feel heavy pretty quickly. Also, a minimal amount of gear on your person means a minimum amount of gear can be stolen. Chicago has the unfortunate reputation as one of the most dangerous cities in America. Be inconspicuous. Travel with a friend or significant other, and be safe!

I can't imagine needing a 100-400 for cityscapes. The two you are renting will be sufficient. There are three versions of the 18-135. Make sure the one you rent is the newest nano USM version, or at least it's predecessor, the STM version. The original version is ok, but the newer versions are much better.

Its the STM.

I found this fairly humorous. But others may not.

I own both of the lenses you are renting. I am very pleased with them and for around Chicago, I can’t imagine needing more unless you are serious into architecture photography and then a tilt shift.

Chicago is a great photography city! Many things to photography (not shoot) in downtown and the ‘burbs including the people! I was there from 2000-2007! I would offer to come up and tote your equipment but I still get over two broken up legs from a year ago. A few days shooting Chicago sounds great!
