I have been to Chicago twice recently. I took my 18- 70 mm and my 70-300 mm on my D3300. Hardly ever used the 70-300 except on the boat cruise on the Chicago River. I also took along a point and shoot for when carrying the DSLR wasn't convenient.
I think the two rentals will be all you need!

For the Chicago area Glock makes a great series
I prefer the S+W with 40mm lens.

I will be visiting Chicago next weekend. I was what lenses to bring. I own a 18-55mm kit lens, a 55-250 lenses and a 100-400 lens.
I’m going to rent a Tokina 11-20 f2.8 and Canon 18-135 mm lens.
Any thoughts about my choices that I’m renting.
If architecture is your thing, consider renting a tilt-shift!!!! 😬
Sadly it has come to that about Chicago and the comments about Glock and S&W. I grew up a short bus ride from downtown (the #42 bus) and a short walk to then Comiskey Park. I have wanted to get back to Navy Pier and shoot the skyline from the top deck of the parking garage again but do not want to go there/be there myself after dark. it ain't what it used to be decades ago and the price for parking is BRUTAL!
If you would get yourself a Tamron 18-400 it would be the only lens you would need. Trust me.

I've got one, but it's highly unlikely that the OP will need 400mm in the city unless he wants close-ups of clock towers and such. For cityscapes usually wider is better.

If it were me, I would take a Asst 35 or 50 and leave te rest at home. Cities are close and intimate.

You are half right. You can walk safely at night in the same areas as you would during the day. Do not worry. Parking is way too expensive and scarce. Make it easy for yourself and take cabs or public transportation.

I grew up in the city and now live in an adjacent suburb. I disagree with most of the advice given. What we do not know is where the OP will visit, inside or outside, his interests, his skills, where he is staying, how he intends to get around.... Chicago has plenty of great photo ops inside and out, downtown or in the neighborhoods. The museums are great. Plenty of fine street photography to be had. And interesting food.
The OP can do a fine job with what he has already. As for me, I would stick with my 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 and 18-300. Just spent time in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem where the photographic landscape is similar to Chicago and used all three.
As for the OP, enjoy your stay here. You probably will not be disappointed.

Two more ignorant remarks. Why not keep them to yourself?
We are taking the train to Union Station then the train to the Halsted. So I feel safe plus my nephew will be with me. We plan on doing a sunset cruise to get the city lights. I’m also going to do some research on pictures others have, to help my inspiration.
