To 'upgrade' or not . . .

Assuming you can afford it, buy what you want. I hate being reminded that "life if short" but apparently you need to hear it. Get want you want and stop your whining. I just replaced my D800 with a D850 which was not necessary. I also just got an iPhone Xs Max which I don't have to have - great camera, though. If you don't have the money, then that is another matter. Go to plan "B".

Size definitely matters when it comes to lugging around a 6D w/L glass collection. Sony offers FF lure in a lighter package.

Rent to try before you buy...

The only weight saving mirrorless platform is Micro 4/3. That means Olympus and/or Panasonic bodies plus your choice of over 100 native lenses.

Sony BODIES are lighter. Their lenses are not significantly lighter!

I am doing my best to get over GAS so I've started asking the question, will the upgrade or new piece of gear make me a better photographer. Most of the time, the answer is no, so I have been spending money on training materials and trips to places that provide the inspiration and opportunity to improve.

Good knowledge and experiences are better investments than gear, unless you NEED the gear for a specific application or learning assignment. If you're a portrait photographer, you don't NEED a 1000mm lens. If you're working for Sports Illustrated, doing sideline action, you don't NEED a 7' white octobox.

Remember they are out to make money they will never give you full used price you must determine if it is good enough to make the deal. Look at lens selection for the different systems see if they meet your needs.

In a phone conversation with B&H several months ago about the value of my Nikon D700 camera I was told the value is based on 70% of the then current retail value of the camera, and that most used photography equipment are valued this way. They said my D700 was valued at $700.00 used, and they would pay $490.00.

You are way better off selling your gear privately, companies like Adorama will basically cheat you and give you about a third of what your stuff is worth and then sell it for close to full blown retail.

I will keep my "old" gear until the day I die.
I researched every piece of gear I own.
I read damn near every word printed, on my cameras and lenses.
I bought what was right for me.
I didn't buy bells and whistles.
I bought old used gear for pennies on the dollar.
I will put my old gear images up against any new camera on the market.
The only upgrade I will make is in a few years, when a used 1Dx ll is under a 1,000

As long as it's really needed. One thing I'd ask the O.P. is if he prints large enough to justify full frame. Once you get into full frame the glass is going to get expensive.

Printing large landscape shots? Remember that the EM5 Mark2 has 64mp hi res shots, the EM1 mark2 has 80mp files. You can print huge with these Olympus cameras

Upgrade the lenses and body...here's a few from my last trip out to the badlands and the black hills. Don't forget you can easily stitch images together to be able to print SUPER large.

m4/3 is very versatile, small and compact if need be...My favorite lenses are 7-14, 12-40, 75 and 150 f2 (this is a 4/3 lens) with EC-20 and EC-14. I could probably sell all my other lenses if I needed to. Of my remaining lenses I use the 25 f1.4 when I need the light gathering capabilities.

Well I don't buy photo gear as I needed because to be honest I don't need any photo gear. I don't make a living with them. I buy what I want and if I can't afford it I simply go without.

You seem to have spent the last several years looking for something different, something better. You’re smart enough to realize that is an endless chase that wastes many hours of your time. Certainly it was for me until I ‘discovered’ Fujifilm cameras and their array of incredibly fast, sharp lenses. I strongly suggest that you consider Fuji cameras like the X-T2 (mirrorless DSLR format) or the X-Pro2 (mirrorless digital rangefinder format) and, my current favorite, the X100F (premium, advanced digital compact with a 35mm equivalent fixed lens). Best wishes on your journey. /Ralph

I wouldn't forget to, at least, look at the X-H1... Suppose to be a fine camera.

No, I believe the same, the guy has already made up his mind, he could care less what we think as long as any of us would agree that he indeed needed an upgrade.

I am a retired Pharmaceutical Analyst for a Hedge Fund. I always asked a ton of questions from my investment team and others. At times I went with my own assessment and did the deal that way. They did not take it as a slight. That may be the path to take.
Having said that, there are some people here who get a little anal if their beliefs are not taken as gospel.

Sent virtually all my 'old' equipment (including some very nice canon 2.8L glass and 6D body plus Lumix G1 and glass and Sony NEX7 w/glass) to Adorama for trade-in value with thoughts to upgrade to FF Sony A7 III and 24-70 2.8 G lens. Problem is their offer came in way short of the total amount needed to move up even with their 'discount.'

Here's question: With very capable and handy Oly 5 MII and several Oly 'pro' lenses, do I ditch my FF dreams and use the $$$ to upgrade within the Oly system, perhaps to an OM-D E-M1 MARK II and a wide 'pro' prime? Can a guy, with a couple of additions now and then, ever be happy with what he already has??

Is there any image-making capability or specific feature you NEED that your current
equipment lacks? If the honest response is "no," you've answered your own question.
Save your money; you never know when you might need it for something more important.
In government,it's called a "rainy-day fund."

Although it's obviously an extreme comparison, many of my best images were shot
on film with a Diana toy camera shown here. All plastic including the lens. Each one
is different due to terrible manufacturing quality control in China when they were made,
up to around 1970. Difficult film winding mechanism often jams, frequent light leaks,
and a viewfinder that gives you only a very rough idea of what you're pointed at. And
yet the images it provides are of a unique character. Goes for about $50 on ebay.
Note: I also shoot with a Sony DSLR.

Best of luck. >Alan

They are not "cheating"you, if you accept their offer... They are in business to make money, and will offer you what they think is a fair offer for both parties.

If you sell to Keh, Adorama, B&H, etc., you will get basically the same amount of money for your used equipment. You have to sell it on-line or on sites like UHH to get more. I look at it as less hassle, less money versus more money, more risk. Obviously your choice.

If you are use to the E-M5 mrII menu, it will not be as hard to learn and understand the E-M1mrII menu. It is a fantastic travel camera with all the control one could want. Don't get me wrong; I just used mine to shoot a former state senator's birthday (289 shots and only 7 shots needed to deleted; the camera is that capable). I own the 7-14 f2.8 and it is as good as the reviews say it is. Some day I will probably get a fast wide prime, but the 7-14 has pushed it way down the wish list.

As far as the FF dreams - unless you need the low light capabilities, or high pixel count, or win the lottery, I would just let them be dreams.
