To 'upgrade' or not . . .

I traded all of my Nikon film cameras and lenses to buy a digital and kit lenses. It was during a demo day and the Nikon guy said that I might be able to get my old lenses onto the camera but might not have been able to remove them. That did frighten me. I recently purchased a Tokina fisheye and it was old school. I have had no problem with it, so I am sorry I gave away my old pro-quality glass. I subsequently bought a modern 50mm 1.8 which is auto with my new camera, my old one was 50mm 1.4 but not auto. The Nikon man might have been correct but I feel a bit taken.

quote=jerzee.shore.shooter]Sent virtually all my 'old' equipment (including some very nice canon 2.8L glass and 6D body plus Lumix G1 and glass and Sony NEX7 w/glass) to Adorama for trade-in value with thoughts to upgrade to FF Sony A7 III and 24-70 2.8 G lens. Problem is their offer came in way short of the total amount needed to move up even with their 'discount.'

Here's question: With very capable and handy Oly 5 MII and several Oly 'pro' lenses, do I ditch my FF dreams and use the $$$ to upgrade within the Oly system, perhaps to an OM-D E-M1 MARK II and a wide 'pro' prime? Can a guy, with a couple of additions now and then, ever be happy with what he already has??[/quote]

I have the Olympus 5 MKII and will never trade it in for a Sony --Remember FF mirrorless camera is small but the lenses are big as big as a DSLR FF so I stick to my Olympus and the smaller lenses --

You are way better off selling your gear privately, companies like Adorama will basically cheat you and give you about a third of what your stuff is worth and then sell it for close to full blown retail.

It is NOT a cheat. The retailers like Adorama and B&H evaluate the equipment, do some minor refurb and cleaning and provide a warranty on used equipment that they sell. The “cheat” that you unkindly refer to provides what most us call “retail markup” and pays their payroll, bricks and mortar store, website, on-line chat and leaves a bit for profit on which the owners pay tax.

It boils down to only a couple of questions for me. In the best of circumstance, WiLL THE BEST PRICES ACHIEVED by selling all the gear you listed buy the gear you want at current best prices. If that is possible then drop any idea of trading the used equipment in. FORGET it. Sell ang buy alone!!! No compromises will make you happy if prices are equivalent.

If you can't make the figures match up, then the only option to take second or third best and never look back.

I would not consider any other option if the value of your used gear matches what you can buy the new gears will cost. No F'ing Way!!! Simple!I don't care how lopsided the bill becomes, but these camera companies are screwing the heck out of us to meet their payrolls and also making some people wealthy. Time to draw the line somewhere!!!

None of them have your or my best interest at heart. Anyone who think more of these companies than their own wallet is stupid!

This question, in one form or another, comes up every few weeks. My reaction is always the same: if you can afford it and not short every day expenses, go for it. If your not going to hurt anyone else or short something; it's your money....

My current Canon 7D II is four years old and I upgraded to that because of AF at f8 and a couple of other features. I have a Canon 17-40 f4 L, a Canon 24-105 f4 L IS and a Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS (1st generation). I have a 1.4x and 2x teleconverter and 12mm and 25mm extension tubes. Outside of the 4 year-old camera, everything is at least six years old and I have no urge to replace any of it. None of what I have limits the quality of my shots. The only limit on that is the guy behind the lens. I bought each lens for specific reasons and while I don't use the 70-200 for rodeo photography anymore, with the 1.4x attached it is a perfect setup for sports car races at Daytona and Sebring. A new 100-400 L series lens would be nice and would certainly be a bit sharper for birding, but the cost/benefit ratio just doesn't work for me. We all get wrapped in the "new equipment" thing, but in reality, most of us who have been doing this for several years probably have what we need to make great shots. It is just up to us to go out there and be creative and remember the things that make those shots happen. One of the things that has worked for me is to take fewer shots of a particular subject. Huh? I say that because it gives me more time to think about what I am doing, about what might make the shot better. I rely less on "spray and pray".

I thought about going mirrorless, but discovered when comparing weight that any FF system with lenses is heavy. The micro 4/3 systems are a substantial improvement in both bulk and weight. I have an early generation Panasonic and a mediocre lens with some beautiful shots to its credit. I have added a few lenses so my wife can use it. The setup is far lighter than my Nikon and the newer 4/3 cameras get great reviews. The Nikon is very valuable as an inducement to keep working out and lifting weights into my old age.

I used MPB to sell a D800 body and, a month later, a 80-200 lens and received about 1/4 to 1/3 more $$$ compared to quotes by B&H. I didn’t want the time and hassle factors selling something myself on EBay or UHH.

Stick with Olympus. Stop playing with new camera gear and take pictures.
I was buying one camera a year until three years ago when I found the body that works for me.
My next (and probably only) camera purchase will be one small high quality mirrorless camera for my old-old age when I can not carry the DSLRs I love.

Jerzee I've seen what that Oly OM-D E-M1 MARK II can do in the right hands so that wouldn't be a bad choice. Good luck.
