Have done a fair amount of travel in Europe and have always been warned about pick pockets and street muggings, so wouldn't walk around with $3000 worth of camera and lenses. I like a less expensive, say < $750 full featured point and shoot with a reasonable zoom. Might look at the Panasonic Lumix or Canon Powershot series, but there are other good ones out there.

The danger of street muggings even in tough European cities is exaggerated. I did lots of walking in Rome, Marseilles, Naples, Palermo and other Sicilian towns carrying a DSLR and never had a problem. Nor do I know anyone else who did. Can't say the same about the Third World. Your gear should be covered by a personal articles insurance policy anyway. Pickpockets yes... but (lol) that's a reason NOT to have a small camera in your pocket.

Another idea. Leave cameras at home

Buy postcards, create an Instagram collection of the locations.

Going to Europe next month for 30 days..part cruise part land...wife kindly suggesting I pack Light !

I have a Nikon D500 and several lens..always been very pleased with the quality of the results...

Since I am getting older and a tad tired of lugging 3 lenses + the D500 I am contemplating getting a Sony RX10 IV and just bringing that...

I am probably overthinking this...as I boil things down it all comes down to weight. I know that the D500 will at the end of the day will produce better images (RAW + Jpeg)

But the Sony RX 10 IV seems to be an easier solution - easier to travel with, Great zoom lens, + flash if I need it...probably sacrificing image quality a little - but I won't enlarge anything beyond 8x10 if that....

Of course on the other side I will be shelling out some bucks for the new camera....So I keep going back and forth....

Ok what do you think ?

Suck it up and bring the D500 gear or go for the Sony RX10 IV ?

You can borrow an RX10M4 for a day at a Sony store - for free. I don't think a 2.5 lb camera with a lens that has an equivalent field of view of a fast (f2.8 to f4) 24-600mm lens is even close to being heavy, and the image quality is pretty exceptional.

Just some comments. I have a Sony a7s II and some lens. It is a great camera like the upper Nikons and Canons.
Maybe a little better with its low light capability. This camera with the 55mm is amazing. And the f4 version 70. 200 is good. Some thoughts.

I have the RX10 III for a while now. I would like the latest version but this camera is amazing.
It is my go to camera. The lens designed with Zeiss and produced for Sony is just great.
I take it to my grandchildren’s soccer games and I can follow them from a long distance.
The extra reach changes the game. Rockwell I think made the comment with other experts that Sony’s
1” sensor is as good as bigger sensors. I shot video footage at NASCAR from my seat an event with a
panel and moderator and never left my seat. Great CUs wide shots etc. The images are very sharp.
Even at 600mm. Went to Art Basil indoor show and shot video and stills. So low profile nobody bothered me.
The images to me are different but exciting then my D800 or a7s cameras. I like them.
I was thinking I’d shoot run and gun video with a 10 bit Sony camcorder why don’t I just have
2 of these RX10s and just use them for everything. I don’t shoot landscapes or nature.
Once you have this camera you want to use it all the time. High flash synch. Great Macro.
Sony’s people focusing system. It is a 2.8 f4 24. 600mm. One flaw in long shots occasionally
In a darker situation it hunts. Newer version is worth it for the AF.
Rockwell said he picked up this camera didn’t put in down for months.

Your observation about the AF on the MIII was exactly my impression, and why I waited for the MIV. It was worth the wait.

thank you for your input.....I really like my Nikon D500 and I am always very pleased with the quality & results. The thought of lugging the D500 body & 2 -3 lenses doesn't thrill me ( or my wife).

Seriously thinking of getting the Sony RX10 IV. Just a tad concerned that it will give me similar quality as the D500....

I need to make up my mind real soon as I am leaving in less than 30 days...

Thanks Again!!

Check out the reviews on the Sony RX10 M4 image quality. I own this camera and couldn’t be happier with the image quality plus sharp @ 600mm!

I have both the III and IV. You'd like the IV for the autofocus speed alone. I do, however, miss the Camera Apps in the IV. I wish they'd kept them; very handy.

You’ll need all the time you can manage to learn the menu and camera.
I had a month. just barely enough time prior to our trip.

It will not give you the quality of your D500, but it will give good quality photos without carrying the weight and extra lenses. You just have to decide on whether you want the absolute best IQ, or good IQ with a lot less hassle...

Depends what you mean by quality. If your talking about quality for normal to medium size prints then you wont be able to tell the difference.Check out the sony pics posted on flickr.Large prints might be a different story.

I won't be printing larger than 8x10...

After reading all the great input I received from the folks here, I am leaning towards getting the camera.....tough decision....I set Monday as the final day to decide one way or the other..

Thank you all for the insights - very much appreciated.

Agree. Use both cameras every day to test/learn and save important/critical settings in MR. Don’t shoot “automatic” unless it’s only really quick choice. This was bracketed RAW spot focus/metered at 1/500 from 1/4 mile away. Haven’t done any LR yet. RX10 M4. It can do all that, but if shot “automatic” probably would not get this. Enjoy. IPhone still gets great moments also.

From all the comments, an excellent choice. My only concern would be if you intend to do some high ISO low light shooting. That’s where the smaller sensor is limited compared to an APS body (not the print size).

I've printed 13x19" prints off my Epson printer with excellent results. I wouldn't worry too much about size limitations.
