Ball Head for a Monopod

I would go with a head that tilts on one axis, if a head is needed at all. I use a V-yoke like this: https://www.amazon.com/Hammers-attachment-Camera-monopod-shooting/dp/B005F0S29G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1537527503&sr=8-3&keywords=y+yoke , and rest the lens on it while shooting. It is slightly faster on the draw.

I take lots of kids sports with a Canon 100-400 and 70-200 F2.8 using a monopod by Induro without any head. Attach the lens collar directly to the monopod. Works fine.

My Manfrotto Monopod came with a tilt head (#3229) with quick release. I find that a tilt head is all that is needed....it adjusts for up and down, and you swivel the monopod to pan. Steve Harvey recently reviewed the use of a gimbal head on a tripod, especially for heavy/long lens application. You may want to watch his video.
I believe that a ball head would give too much unwanted "play".

I use a tilt head Benro dj80 on my monopod. Simple to use, solid and stable and suits me just fine. I use a ball head on my manfrotto tripod.

Are use an all metal Manfrotto ball head. I don’t have access to the exact model right now but it’s serviced me very well for the last 10+ years

I agree with the tilt head recommendations. Even a simple one such as the Oben found here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822708-REG/Oben_VH_R2_VH_R2_Swivel_Tilt_Head.html works well. Good luck.

Just a note. If you search B&H for "monopod heads" pretty much all that come up are tilt heads. I bet there is a reason for that.

I would pm MTshooter, who owns Carter's cottage in Montana. Very knowledgeable, will be able to help you make a good decision.Personally, I've purchase my last ball head, as when you release it, all three axis are going to move. My last head was one that I could control each axis separately, and that works much better for me. Hope to get a gimbal in the future, but can't swing one just yet

Really Right Stuff makes a couple of heads that are for monopods. These tilt in one axis only. I have one and find it useful to help make a "tripod" with two of the legs being mine and the third the monopod at an angle. The tilting head keeps the camera level.
Judge for yourself. Only you know how you use it.

What lenses will you be using on your monopod? If you have or plan on using a long lens you may want to look at a gimbal head instead of a ball head.

I too prefer a tilt head. I used to have a Gitzo ball head but did not like it and got a Manfrotto monopod head instead which I like.

I recommend a tilt head. It is much easier to control than a ball head. With a monopod you only need up and down adjustments. For side to side just turn the monopod.

On a monopod, I can't figure out what you get from a gimbal that you do not get from tilt head.
