I would not worry. The SD card is not that radiosensitive (other parts of the camera are more radiosensitive) and the airport x-ray is not that powerful. It would take more than 10,000 passes to have even a minimal effect on the SD card -OR- them taking a very special interest on YOUR camera and keeping in the x-ray beam for a couple of hours - highly unlikely and probably not even possible. I am a Health Physicist by profession - a physicist who works in radiation safety and x-rays are my specialty. I have also run a dosimetry lab for a major national laboratory and have seen the results when a personal dosimeter goes through an airport x-ray.

Never had a problem with mem cards, cell phones, ipads or laptops going through x-ray. Years ago, did put my film in lead lined bag.

Two flights three weeks ago - no problems with USB, SD, CF, MP3, SDRAM, EEPROM, DSDD, CCD, CMOS, TF, CD, DVD, HD, or SSD. OK?

The recorded info on the cards isn't affected by any of the scanning technologies in use.

In the 60's -70's with Ariel Recon USN, and when we had to go through Customs, all film can were marked in big RED letters, TOP SECRET, DO NOT XRAY, OPEN ONLY IN TOTAL DARKNESS. Yes you wanted it brought back we might can help for a price or %.

Duh! Ever think about how many germs are on shopping cart handles at grocery stores and Wal-Mart?

No problem here. I fly often with my gear and have never removed a card from the camera.

This topic has been discussed many times in the past. It is no problem to have your memory card scanned...

It won't effect SD cards any more than it would effect a computer hard drive. In other words, not at all.

True but those germs are more likely to be ones common in the local environment that you have already been exposed to. Air travel can bring bugs from anywhere on the planet. E.g Polio, chicken pos , small pox, tuberculosis, bird flu...

We also could talk about how nasty the airplane tray tables are. However, this thread is about whether memory cards are at risk at the airport security checks. And we have a consensus, rarely seen on UHH.
