X-Ray was bad for film. Scanners could be bad for magnetic tape. Digital memory cards are not bothered by either.

Speaking of airline security, I saw a recent article about a study done in England and Finland showing that those plastic bins they use at screening are loaded with all sorts of germs.

More of a risk removing card from camera and losing it. I also travel a lot and have never had a problem with cards going through multiple scanners. Same with laptop, smart phone, flash drives, and external hard drives. Now TSA personnel a different story ...

Yep! I've had memory cards Xrayed, Magnetically scanned and even washed and dried in the laundry! No problem. The only memory card problem I've ever encountered was physically losing MircoSD cards, My tablet ejects them enthusiastically, If you're not careful it'll fling them 15 feet, No fun if you're outdoors!

Unnecessary. No affect on the cards.

For the last 20 to 15 years I have never taken the cards out of my camera. Here in the States or in Europe.

About the only way you can hurt a card is to break it. Some say you damage by removing or inserting them into the camera while it is on. Leave them in the camera.
