I use Zenfolio to set up 2 websites. They have templates to make it easier to set up a website. There are different prices depending on what you want. I have been very happy with the support and with the two sites.

I know a lot of people use Smugmug. What made me chose Zenfolio, was at the time, several years ago, there was a link on the bottom of Smugmugs pages that went to their site not to the photographers.

Never include digital files when selling your work.

SmugMug is not hard to setup. I get tons of traffic but not enough sells. I'm thinking of dropping it in the near future.

I currently have SmugMug and I've had people say they wanted to buy photo's but the shipping was more than the photo. They says it works okay when you buy a few but if you have just one you want it was to expensive. I was wondering about doing a digital download of the picture they want and let them take it where ever they want. Is there a better way to sell photo's out there?

Thanks

I use White House Custom Color in MN. Order the print sent directly to the customer. 2 day delivery no extra charge. $12.00 minimum order so easy to make a good profit. If I sell digitals they normally have my logo on them. If not I charge more. Include a statement on your invoice stating copyright info and no reproduction other than personal use. Doesn’t stop it but at least it gives people something to think about.

Shipping costs have really skyrocketed in recent years. I think in part to the deals that the "free shipping" online companies have cut with UPS, FedEx, USPS etc. They have to make up the lost revenue somewhere. The initial shipping cost is pretty much set by size and weight. Multiples of the same item or those that can be shipped together only incrementally increase the cost. It's going to ultimately be borne by the customer whether it's built into the price of the item or shown as a separate cost. So you can see how much the shipping is for various sizes, frame styles etc. and then go back and adjust your pricing or just accept that some people are not going to want to pay for shipping because they are not used to it.

WHCC (White House Custom Color) is always 2-day delivery via Fed-x with no extra shipping costs. Obviously they are built into their price structure and the minimum order amount. Prices are reasonable and their work is excellent.

Shipping charges ARE high these days. Many companies have a minimum shipping fee that covers the cost of the packaging and the time it takes. I worked in a store that did some mail order, and we realized that shipping something cost far more than just the cost of the postage. I had a coupon for some prints from Shutterfly. They shipped them separately, and I was charged $10 shipping fee for EACH FREE print! That's why some companies are going to the practice of raising their prices somewhat and then offering free shipping. It seems more painless to the buyer.

Theft and resale is something that is very hard to control....any photo can be copied in one way or another. Even a business name or copyright can be removed... my granddaughter who is a professional in the Flagstaff area, found some of best photos reposted by someone as their own. She got an atty and won, but I think this is very rare.

Can't speak for SmugMug, or, for that matter, about sales in general, since I've had so few. However, as I'm sure you realize, once you give them a download, it's out of your hands, and--especially if it's a superior image--they can turn around and sell copies for their own profit. Not ethical, of course, but certainly possible. I might try to get the best print I could near me, pack it really well, and send them that. Pass on the costs of the print, the shipping, and a fee of your choice.

Depending on what plan you use, SmugMug does allow you to sell digital downloads, in addition to prints.

Why not send a print in a tube as is done a lot in drafting and other businesses. Use a mailing tube. Once the client gets the shot they mount it and frame it and the inherent curl is gone. Or print it and mount it yourself. Use a proper mailing carton for the shot and send it insured.

yes, you can set it up the cost of the prints to customers, which are sold and sent through SmugMug. You can also set the price of a digital download if you want those available

If you are selling photos for publication or use on the web, you have to sell the digital files. Anyway, people could always scan prints, and do whatever they want with them.
