How do you sell photo's

I currently have SmugMug and I've had people say they wanted to buy photo's but the shipping was more than the photo. They says it works okay when you buy a few but if you have just one you want it was to expensive. I was wondering about doing a digital download of the picture they want and let them take it where ever they want. Is there a better way to sell photo's out there?

Thanks

Can't speak for SmugMug, or, for that matter, about sales in general, since I've had so few. However, as I'm sure you realize, once you give them a download, it's out of your hands, and--especially if it's a superior image--they can turn around and sell copies for their own profit. Not ethical, of course, but certainly possible. I might try to get the best print I could near me, pack it really well, and send them that. Pass on the costs of the print, the shipping, and a fee of your choice.

In the old film days, one would sell prints, but never negatives. Allowing someone to download your photo is like giving them a negative. Once they have it, they can do with it whatever they please.

A professional I knew used an online outfit that handled sales. If he did a wedding, he gave them all the digital files and they had a site where the customer could select the pictures and sizes they wanted--the company collected the money, taxes, sent pictures, etc. Each customer could only access their own account (their pictures) to order. I don't think he sold the digital files, but I am sure that if he did, it would be pricey and he would retain certain rights. I don't remember the company, as I have never been pro.

Extreme shipping fees once again on framed prints.

I often have clients contact me directly to order images. I have them printed at Adoramapix. I do charge them the shipping cost, but it is usually much less than those ordered directly from my ronichas.zenfolio.com website.

This helped. I have always wondered the best way to handle this.

I suppose this would also be true for stock photo agencies?

Right, and with a scanner and a printer, they can do the same thing.
