I started with a D3100 with two VR lenses, bought a 55-300 VR lens and a SB500 flash on E-bay. I wanted to jump to a D5300 body and got one on Camerata
that was used. It only had 52 clicks on the shutter. I do not use the WiFi or the GPS, my memory is still good enough that I do not need to drain the battery with this stuff. I don't use the live-view for the same reason. I am just a hobbyist. I have read about the D7500 but D7200 is in my money range, again used from Camerata with it's one year warranty. The D5300 used the same lenses, they say that my lenses will work on a D7200 but not with the auto focus feature. My reason for not jumping to the next level at this point.
My thanks to all of you for your input . I have learned much from your suggestions.
I "upgraded" from a Nikon D60, which I'd been using for about six or seven years, to a D5500 about a year ago and, I'll admit it was partially a fatal GAS attack. Only one regret in the purchase is that about two months later, the D5600 was announced/released.
The D5500 is serving my wants and needs well beyond my expectations. I love the articulated live view screen. It solves some of my height limitations. My only suggestion would be to search for possible refurbished D5600 or a used one. You cannot go wrong with either option. Well, that is my .02 worth. Good luck and keep running up the Shutter Count!
Lol!

Nikonusa.com refurbished or KEH
My husband has the D5500. He’s getting some amazing photos!
I have the D5500 and love it .... but camera evolution is so rapid. Get as much as you can afford..

You got a lot of comments but not much of it based on your actual question (you asked advice re two options; most responses tried to sell you a third!). More importantly, most of the respondents don't seem to care what type of photography you engage in, what your photographic aspirations are, or what lenses you currently own...welcome to the wild and wooly world of UHH!
Search your soul and wallet before you succumb to your GAS attack. Ask yourself where you're going and why. Carefully check camera features against your needs and budget.
PS - I have a D5300 and am very happy with it. I don't see the need to upgrade to a "pro" level camera when I'm not a pro and don't aspire to be one. I'm more interested in upgrading my photographic skills and the D5300 is just fine for that.

I can totally believe that, the D5xxx series is an excellent camera which can take some amazing pictures. You can also do that with the D3xxx series camera. It's really up to the photographer. A newer or more sophisticated camera will not compensate for a bad picture taker; they just allow you to take good or bad pictures faster and put them on line faster, if that's a concern for you.
A good photographer can take amazing photos with any camera.
You can buy a lightly used D7100 for the price of a D5500. Check it out.

Just uncalled for!! Where were you when owners complain about the rubber coverings on camera's turning sticky. Now that is still on every camera Nikon puts out!

I totally agree with you, srt101fan. I shoot with a D5300, and it's a fine camera with great IQ. About all that the D5500 adds is a touch screen, and I don't need that anyway. But I feel that either of these cameras (or a D5600) would be a good upgrade for the OP and would serve him well.
Cameta Camera gives a full year warranty on refurbished. If they have what you want, it's a good deal.

Thanks, we made plenty of them daily but can't sell them.

Is there any lens that will autofocus on a D5xxx camera and not a D7xxx camera? I've not heard of that. (There are plenty of lenses (the older AF D series) that will autofocus on D7xxx but not D5xxx or D3xxx.)

I went from the D3300 to the D5600 recently. I looked at the D7200 but liked the lighter weight, smaller size, and the articulating touch screen on the D5600. I had an articulating screen on my G11 when I upgraded to the D3300 and really missed it.
