I am now using the D3100 and am looking to get a D3400 or a D5500. Any suggestions as to which one and where to get a good buy? Used, of course..

Used D3500? They were just announced. I would guess used D3400 will be widely available now.

I believe that's D5500.

Since we're talking used, maybe looking into a nice used D7200 would be worth pursuing. I know a good used D7200 could cost as much as a new D3400 but the D7200 is a pretty awesome camera that would probably last you many, many years.

Yep, you're right; I misread. I blame society and global warming.

I’d at least go to the 5500.

The D3400 does not have a sensor cleaner. I wouldn't buy it for that reason.

My recommendations would be a Nikon 7200. The 7200 has many more features and I know you will enjoy this camera.

I'd say go for the D7200. I shot a D3100 for for years and upgraded to D7200. Outstanding camera. Still have the D3100 as backup. Uses the same lenses.
You'll love the D7200.

Personally, If I were upgrading from a D3XXX, it wouldn't be to another D3XXX. I would skip over the D3XXX and D5XXX and go to the D7XXX. The Nikon D7XXX is considered a semi-pro or pro-am camera and has more features than either of the other two product lines. It is also better constructed (and yes, somewhat heavier). And you can probably get a used D7XXX for a decent price. Also, ALL of your SWM lenses will work fine on the D7100 and above, and it will also use the prior AFS and also older manual Nikkor lenses. This will give you a wider selection of lenses... and, as many will tell you, the lenses are the major investment in a camera. Most photographers invest far more of their budget for lenses than they have invested in a camera body. I picked up a very good used Nikkor 80-400mm lens that probably would have cost more than my D7100 when I bought the body new... or maybe my D610... the point here is that the D7xxx body gives you a wider seclection of lenses and more options.. not to mention better capabilities.. and is considered a semi-pro body. And you can probably find a decently priced used D7XXX on the market. Personally, I would probably look at the D7100, D7200. The D7500 has some increased features (flip/touchscreen back) and also looses a couple. So I would look at a comparison to see which make sense to you. But, I would (if you are getting serious about photography and becoming or striving to become an advanced amateur) seriously consider moving out of the D3xxx and D5xxx arena... You might even consider moving to the D6xx. I personally have a D610 (for my full frame FX shots which are generally portrait and landscape) and my D7100 (crop frame or DX). I now have gotten rid of All of my DX lenses (which were typically lower quality glass, lighter weight metal or plastic and designed for entry level shooting and replaced all of my glass with FX lenses which work fine on both my DX and FX cameras. The lenses are better constructed and higher quality images. (less distortion etc.). Please understand that I'm not trying to be a snob but since you are looking to upgrade, then upgrade and don't just settle. Neither of the lines (D3X00 and D5X00) are semi-pro. They are both considered entry level or amateur and are designed for the "weekend" shooter.

The D5300 has most of the D5500 features, and may be less expensive. You'll love the fully articulated screen, and the light weight. The D7200 is more heavy duty, but also more expensive.

3000 and 5000 are plastic crap, get a 7100 or 7200 used and you will not need to upgrade again...

Upgrades to a camera body should be done only when the camera body is the single element holding back your ability to capture excellent images. Otherwise, invest in glass.

Why not refurb? Cameta offers such cameras with a one year warranty.
