I will not get into the raw versus jpg argument but for your purposes, why even use raw? Your camera came with software which probably converts raw to jpg and that should do the job.

PS The effort and thinking to process jpg and raw are the same but the latter can give far superior results.

Hi abc - "The effort and thinking to process jpg and raw are the same but the latter can give far superior results" - I would qualify that statement by adding "in some circumstances" and surely you have "got into the raw versus jpg argument" ?

Well, it isn't free, but it is a one time buy, I am now using Luminar 2018, and soon will reload Lightroom

If you’re going to try Luminar make sure it runs on your computer first. I bought it, used it, got an update and it never ran again. I have a core i7 laptop, with 16 gig of ram. Everything else runs fine! After weeks of back and forth, finally promised a refund, but it’s been 2 weeks and still nothing. They are trying to get their software to run on a pc as well as it does on a Mac. Their programmers are doing things a bit sloppy which causes problems for many. If you google it you’ll find many, many people having the same problem.

I. Can not recommend this software!

Photo Processing Programs I use: PhotoScape X Free - Intuitive and easy to use. A really good standalone program. (85%), Adobe LightRoom 6 Verison 6.14 (Not Free - Classic?) Standalone (5%), and Picasa 3 (2% to import and organize ONLY). For “special projects” (8%) I use the following freeware; Andrea Moasic, Raw Therapee 5.3, Regi Stax 6, Noiseware Community Edition, and Canon Digital Pro 4. PhotoscapeX tutorials: http://x.photoscape.org/help.php

Can anyone suggest a good "free" RAW processing software for CR2 photo's, i know of all the pay per month ones but as I only use RAW in certain circumstances i do not see the point in paying for it.

CR2 mean Canon and it comes with DPP which plays with raw and jpg. You may have find it on the web and download it, unless it came in the box. Problem solved and does some basic functions. Problem solved!

I've used this as well as Raw Therapee. Either will fit your needs.

Umm, it came with your Canon! It’s Canon Digital Photo Professional. If you don’t have the disc, download it from Canon’s website.

Punch your question into Google and then make up your mind.

Why do we have UHH if you suggest we just use Google? While Google will give you the list, UHH is here for guidance.

Of course. Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 (DPP) software. It came with your camera.

Lightroom no longer offers a one time purchase, it is all monthly fee based now. They don't support LR 5 at all, and LR6 will also soon be abandoned.
