I expect to pick up my new iMac today or tomorrow. It comes with 8 gb of RAM, which I will upgrade to 40 gb (by adding 32 gb). I would like opinions on the best companies (Crucial, Adamanta, Corsair, etc. ) from those who have actual experience.

The 2017 iMac with retina display accepts a total of 64gig. Lucky you. If you can afford it, go for the max. And by the way, save yourself big money and install non apple memory. I have been running my apple iMac 27" with third party32 gig memory without any problem. You choose, good luck and enjoy.

Thanks. I will be installing non-Apple RAM. My question is which 3rd party is best?

I used crucial to increase my ram from 8 to 32(the max my older iMac will allow). No problem for years. It was surprised to hear that you have access to the memory module on the newer models. I thought they did away with that and you had to order it with what you wanted installed.

Thanks. There is no access on the 21 in. The 27in has an access door on the back.

When you upgrade your memory, you will probably end up with 32gb of RAM (as your total).
I could be wrong but the memory “modules” usually come in pairs. Your two 4gb modules will be
replaced by two 16gb modules equalling 32gb total. It’s either or. You have to have matching pairs
of memory, so you don’t get to keep the 8gb you already have. At least that’s how I understand it.

Thanks. I’ve looked at numerous videos, and from what I gather, I can get the 40 gigs. Apparently, the best solution is to remove the two 4 gb modules and replace them with two 16 gb modules. Then, place the original 4 gb modules in the two empty slots. I’ll check with Apple when I pick up my computer.

I just got my new 27" with 2 T drive and 4.5 i7 chip. The 8 gig of ram is comprised of two 4 gig pieces that are mounted on the mother board and not accessible. There are 2 memory card slots under the door in the back (gotta push the button by the cord receptor to open - I had a hard time finding it). Both can take 16 gig cards. I added one for 24 gig of memory. Any 2400 memory card will do. Sometimes the cards advertised as PC cards are the least expensive.

BTW - I replaced a late 2009 27 iMac and my new one screams - esp with LR and PS.

I had success buying from Crucial. You go to their web site, put in the specific information about your computer and you get their guaranteed recommendation for ram upgrade options.

BTW - I got mine from B&W - both the computer and the memory. Got it used for $2038 (list $2550) and memory was same price as other Crucial sticks on other sites. Delivery in 2 days from NY to CA.
