I just got my new 27" with 2 T drive and 4.5 i7 chip. The 8 gig of ram is comprised of two 4 gig pieces that are mounted on the mother board and not accessible. There are 2 memory card slots under the door in the back (gotta push the button by the cord receptor to open - I had a hard time finding it). Both can take 16 gig cards. I added one for 24 gig of memory. Any 2400 memory card will do. Sometimes the cards advertised as PC cards are the least expensive.

BTW - I replaced a late 2009 27 iMac and my new one screams - esp with LR and PS.

Thanks. Perhaps because you have an i7 chip, the RAM is mounted on the motherboard. I don’t know. With the i5 chip I do know that there are four slots for RAM modules located behind a door on the rear of the monitor. Each slot (in the 3.5 model) will accept one 16gb module, for a maximum of 64gb.

BTW - I got mine from B&W - both the computer and the memory. Got it used for $2038 (list $2550) and memory was same price as other Crucial sticks on other sites. Delivery in 2 days from NY to CA.

I just ordered 32 gb RAM from B & H. Will be here on Tuesday. Hopefully it will install easily and work properly.

Try looking at Other World Computing, OWC.com I think.

Thanks. I will be installing non-Apple RAM. My question is which 3rd party is best?

Crucial gets my vote. I've used it in my PC's and Mac's for years and have it installed in my current iMac.

Thanks. I did check out OWC. It gets excellent reviews, as does Crucial. I decided to go with Crucial. I hope it works out.

I expect to pick up my new iMac today or tomorrow. It comes with 8 gb of RAM, which I will upgrade to 40 gb (by adding 32 gb). I would like opinions on the best companies (Crucial, Adamanta, Corsair, etc. ) from those who have actual experience.
Thanks.
Steve

Go for 64 GB if you can swing it!

I have a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) that I ordered with 8GB. I ordered 32GB from OWC when I bought the iMac and installed it myself. There are four slots for memory and the two 4GB were in alternate slots, so I just put the two 16GB cards in the two available slots. No problem - on boot up the computer read 40GB of memory and it has been smooth sailing ever since.

I’ll try that first. If it doesn’t work, I’ll switch out the slots.

I know you have the 32 GB coming in from B&H. But I would listen to others here. Max out at 64. Return the 32 and get the 64. It shouldn't cost you to return other than the shipping.

Seems like I remember Crucial did a quick scan of your computer then links you to what you need. I used them for 2 different Apple computers.

Does Crucial have much in the line of software?

No need to return the 32. If, and when, I’m ready to upgrade to 64gb, I just need to order an additional 32gb and place them (2x16) in the two slots holding the original 8 gb (2x4). Four slots, each with 16 gb would give me 64 gb. At this time I believe 40 gb is sufficient. Time will tell.

you are probably right. but you might want to check out if the 'slots' must have equal sized memory cards. Your configuration might create a problem.
