Learning to use Layers is a great process for editing. A book called "Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks" for Photoshop provides over 20 layer lessons. I took a semester course in Photoshop CS5, but this book provided some neat information beyond what I was taught in the College course. I got the book on Amazon for $13 plus $4 shipping as a used but in new condition book. If you have Photoshop, I would recommend taking a class in order to get the value out of the software.

Think of layers as the old transparency films for presentations, photoshop and others divide a photo into layers that you can lay on top of one another to create the complete picture, or you can insert one more layer to make a subject appear as if it was IN the photo when you shot it. You can also adjust the layers to create different effects like turn all the layers black and white except the one with your subjects lips and keep them bright red or whatev. Experiment and have fun with the layers to create some cool pics.
