Actually you tube has some excellent tutorials on a broad range of photography subjects given by professional and knowledgeable amateur photographers. Complete courses are available free through many public libraries or at a nominal fee.

Google myfavoritemagazine, go to it's website and click on the "Photo" tab. They offer two general photo magazines, "Digital Camera" and Digital Photographer" as well as a 100% Canon users magazine called "Photo Plus" and a 100% Nikon users magazine called "N Photo". These are UK based magazines so the subscriptions to the USA are a bit expensive. I subscribe to "Photo Plus" and it's filled with usable information. I purchased an oversized version of my cameras manual from them, 5"x7" and it was ring bound so it lays flat. You might find these magazines at a local Barnes and Noble.

Yes, I, too, got Popular Science without a clear explanation. As it turns out, I find it a rather interesting magazine. I don't know yet whether I'll continue the subscription.

Hey! Just be thankful that SHUTTERBUG is at least giving you something. My subscription was to run into 2020, and I haven't heard anything from them. I would let them extend my subscription to Outdoor Photographer even though I agree with those who don't think it's all that great a magazine. Now if they could give me a discount on PhotoPlus, that would be nice.

I too have a lot of magazines coming. I renewed for two years and only got 5 issues before they went belly up. But yesterday when I was checking my emails, I went to the junk folder to delete everything. I always take a quick look first, and there was the email from Shutterbug. It states that everyone who has an active subscription will be getting OP starting with the October issue, unless they contact them requesting a refund. Maybe your notice went into your junk folder too! I'm looking forward to checking out OP.

Damn. First they said they got bought by a UK group, now I just got word that my subscription is being moved to "Outdoor Photographer." June was the last issue.

I had the happy honor to write for them during the early days of digital photography and one of my "how-to" guides was a cover story that ended up very nicely for me.

What a loss. Where are new photographers going to go to learn things? Youtube?

Actually, you tube has a lot of really great photo advice for all levels of photography. And one of the responders to your question was right on, readers today are not interested on reading any long piece. Either a tweet or a visual piece to show how photography works is how the young generation of today works. I am of the generation that a book was worth its weight in gold, now it is a paper weight. Go figure, times are changing.

The Popular Science subscriptions were/are meant to replace and fill out your remaining issues of Popular Photography. I agree that some of the issues are very interesting.. As a kid, many, (don't ask) years ago, I subscribed to Popular Science, Mechanix Illustrated and Popular Mechanics. I think I overdosed on science and technology. I am still waiting on widespread use of Aerocars and Jetpaks, however....!!

Lets face it. The new generation just don't like to read the printed page anymore. They get all their information from the boob tube or their computer.

More often from their phone or tablet.

I recently subscribed to Outdoor Photography and have been very disappointed in it. Very little of the content is useful to me. This forum is much more interesting and useful.

What about starting your own column like back in the day for us to learn on here!
I would love to read what you have to say and no paper involved!

J-SPEIGHT SHARES...

Think about it please.

I went to 2 Nikon Schools many years ago - don't know of they still exist but learned tons of trick back then. If you can find one it's well worth the time! Rick

As many of the responders, I also enjoyed Shutterbug but haven't read it in years. However I had an experience quite different than that of the writer who had work published
I submitted an article on photographing the periphery of a baseball game, the idea being that if you lacked a 400mm f2.8 you could still capture unique images. The article was set for publishing when a new editor took over and canceled it. OK, that's life. But next spring, there was the same article concept with similar pictures
I know magazines protect themselves against coincidences and maybe that was all this amounted to. However I submitted a second article about getting travel pictures when vacationing with family and having to make the best of opportunities in crowds an under the harsh mid-day sun. Rejected. Less than a year later...you know where I'm going with this. I started writing for local publications and enjoyed that experience.

Glad the other writer got published.

Maybe I'm the rare one here, but I never cared for Shutterbug. Too many ads, not enough meat.

The Internet is a FAR better source of information, it's interactive, and it's in my pocket at all times.

burkphoto, I agree. However, each time I decided to drop my subscription, they managed to run an article I found very interesting and I resubscribed. The price was never really an issue and they kept sucking me in. In the end, I did drop them before they folded.

Shutterbug Magazine did present new developments in photography. I subscribed mainly for this reason. In any event, I will miss it along with Popular Photography. I maintain my subscription to Outdoor Photography primarily because I do a lot of landscape photography.
