Damn. First they said they got bought by a UK group, now I just got word that my subscription is being moved to "Outdoor Photographer." June was the last issue.
I had the happy honor to write for them during the early days of digital photography and one of my "how-to" guides was a cover story that ended up very nicely for me.
What a loss. Where are new photographers going to go to learn things? Youtube?

No, UHH. Loosen up those fingers and tap-out some advice here, Dude.
Afraid so. Reading anything longer than a tweet is far beyond the abilities of today's "give it to me now" generation.

From the Ugly Hedgehog, where else?

A good question. My friend gave me a subscription to Outdoor Photographer as a Christmas gift and I told him not to bother, anymore. Outdoor Photographer should be called "Outdoor Professional Photographer" almost never offering a review on a lens costing less than $1,500 or body costing less than $2,500. Articles about shooting outdoor locations generally consist of how the author got that great shot while on an African safari or in a remote valley deep in New Zealand...not much for us "enthusiasts" on a fixed income!

There are innumerable sources of information, tutorials, classes and clubs where
photography can be learned. It's all out there. The only thing I learned from
Shutterbug is the infallibility of the print media.

There are enough Shutterbug back issues to keep new photographers busy reading and learning for a long time!
I often go to the public library to read old copies of photography magazines which are no longer being published. The equipment reviews may be outdated, but for the most part the lessons are still very applicable. One can also find plenty of photography books at the library. For those who are unsure if a trip to the library will be worth it, with many libraries nowadays you can look up online a full list of all books and magazines they have available on any given topic.

I received the same notice for my Shutterbug subscription. The magazines I subscribed to in the 70's and 80's had a lot of useful articles. Today's magazines are more advertising than articles. (Yes, I know they have to make their money somewhere) My plan is to see if I like the Outdoor Photography magazine then decide whether or not to cancel what's left of my subscription.

They announced that a few month ago, it was mentioned here back then and several times there after!

YouTube is excellent place for photographic information.

Print magazines and newspapers are a financially loosing proposition and have been for quite some time
And just to let you know, it is vendors who submit product for review based on purchasing ad space. Our hobby is expensive, and everybody knows it.

Take a look at Outdoor Photography Canada magazine. It's an excellent quality magazine. They have great articles. I buy it at Barnes & Noble.
Hey, Fourlocks! I agree with you completely! I've been subscribed to Outdoor Photographer for many years, but except for a few articles on HDR, or some guys with monthly features on shooting techniques, there hasn't been much that I can put to use. I'll see an article about some guy camping out for four days with expensive equipment on another continent and think "Yeah! Sure!" It takes me about 10 minutes to go through the magazine. UHH is much more helpful. --- Jackie

Have been getting that for years and now the only publication I get is Outdoor Photographer. Hope that one stays afloat.
