I have a Sony a77ii and the Sony 70-400 G. It seems the new RX10 will take better pictures and has a much longer reach! Can this be?

Longer reach? No if you use "equivalent" focal length as the standard (same as angle of view but inverted). RX10 m3 & m4 have 600 equivalent but a 400 actual on a 1.5 crop factor camera also gives 600 equivalent.

Better pictures? That lens or the e-mount 100-400 on an a6500 have the ability to give you noticeably better dynamic range and resolution, including high ISO. The a77ii seems to have pretty much the same APS-C sensor specs. I have the RX10 m4 and an a6500 on which I've used both of the zooms mentioned here.

I don't mean to discourage you. The RX10 m3 and m4 are fantastic for what they are. But a "one inch" sensor is a lot smaller than an APS-C sensor and you can't overcome the physics.

The RX10's have a much greater zoom range, can focus MUCH closer and go MUCH wider. For sheer flexibility, ergonomics, etc. IMHO it is the gold standard. In good light, there is very little difference in IQ between the crop frame camera and the "one inch" camera. You begin to see the difference above 800 ISO (my viewpoint - some say higher). The AF on the RX10 m4 is even better than on the a6500; very accurate, very fast, amazing frame rate too.

I won't say the low light performance of the RX10 III or IV is great but I've shot pix up to ISO 6400 with reasonable results; one attached.

My philosophy is that it is easier to reduce noise than it is to correct a blurred image, i.e.: in other words, get the shot!

Hey a6k I understand the difference in the sensors. I guess what I mean is how the lens on the RX4 can take such amazing pictures up to 600mm f4 and my Very Large and Heavy Sony 70-400mm G can’t seem to match it! Plus I need a tripod! How can this be?

I bought the camera recently for a European trip with the idea of returning it within the 30 trial period if I was not happy. I was happy happy happy within the first dozen pics. I could not believe it. Sony/Zeiss hit some kind of sweet spot.

The short answer is I don't know but we don't disagree much.

The longer version is personal and anecdotal. Before I bought my RX10m3 (since upgraded to m4) I rented it and a7rm2 and a SAL70-400 G (with A to E adapter, of course). I used both for daily bird drives. This was in central FL and the birding opportunities are abundant. I found that I was getting a much higher percentage of "keepers" with the RX10 and that they were of sufficient, even good image quality. My very best shots were taken with the full frame a7Rii and the 70-400 but they were a lot harder to get and carrying that camera and lens was too much for me over any period more than about 10 minutes.

So I think it's about ergonomics as much as about the technical chops of the camera's lens and sensor. The RX10 is selling at a very high price for a reason. Photographers are free to buy less expensive cameras and some do but Sony is doing very well with this one. The RX10m3/4 is a superb camera. The studio shots on the internet are just that. Real life picture taking involves the interaction between the person and the camera.

Appreciate your comments a6k! I cannot lug my a77ii and that big lens and a tripod around much anymore especially when hiking. I believe this camera will be my dream camera as I’ve always wanted to shoot BIF! I’m not as concerned with its low light performance as I also have my RX100ii for those situations. Shots I’ve seen from the RX10m4 @ 6400 seems pretty good. I’m normally not a low light shooter. I’m thinking I’ll be using my 77ii just for Macro shots now with my Minolta 100mm and Minolta 70-210mm Beer Can. Wish I lived in Florida with all those beautiful birds Man!

The smaller the sensor the smaller the lens required to project an image...

But still the 1”sensor isn’t that much smaller than the APS-C to obtain such great pictures @ 600mm f4. I’m shocked that the RX10m4 can do this better than my large and heavy A77ii with the 70-400G. Wow!

Here are a couple of BIF, as good as any I have been able to get with my Sony a77ii. The focussing is so fast on the R10iv. I love the shadows on the body in the second photo. Also included, a shot taken as we were leaving St. Malo (France) on the ferry to Portsmouth, highly processed of an otherwise drab photo on a drab day.

Are you using any UV filter on the lens? I seen that B&H has a set by Hoya 3 UV filters and a Polarizer filter 72mm that would fit nicely $62.00. You can change the UV filter according to the amount of sunlight outside. I am going to order the set and try it out.

OMG! Beautiful pictures! I’ve never been able to shoot BIF with my a77ii and my long lens. The tracking was Terrible on the a77ii! That’s what I bought the camera for and am deeply disappointed! When are they going to deliver my RX10m4?? Lol!

I’m not a pro but be careful on a cheap set of filters! They can ruin a shot that you may never get again! I wouldn’t recommend what you’re considering....way too cheap for such a Fantastic camera! Just my 2 cents after doing just what your contemplating years ago.

I have filters for my a99m2. Wish they fit the 72m. Len but they don't. Talked with Josh in Pro cameras from B&H and he told me that this is a good set of filters. Hiya does not sell cheap filters. I have Hoya filters on my pro Sony lenses also. They can add color in bright light and not to be used inside. Outdoor use only.
