Photoshop is a very different tool from Lightroom. Both are complementary, and can do quite a few of the same things. As for LR4, it's great on a small screen like a tablet. This is what it's intended for. LR Classic is much better on a large display.
Are you confusing LRCC with LR 4? LR 4 is an older version of LRCC Classic (LR4, LR5, LR6, LRCC Classic).
I'll stick with my copy of LR5 as long as I can. Granted, it doesn't know about my newest camera, but $120/year doesn't seem reasonable for something I use infrequently. I had a batch to process in June, then more this week. The next project may be in October...

Assuming LR5 does all that you want you can use the Adobe DNG converter for your newer camera and create a DNG that will be editable in LR5.
Photoshop for me, only because I got quite used to it. I use Topaz and Nik plugins a lot. Nik does a good job for noise reduction, and with Nik efex and Vivesa, I can easily do things like remove the haze, add structure, clarity. After all is done, I often find my photos are a bit blue, so I go to Camera Raw in the filter pulldown in Photoshop, go to the histogram, select blue, and knock down the blue peaks a bit. There are other ways to do it too using Topaz. You can use Topaz and Nik plugins with Lightroom of course. Anyway, have been using Photoshop for a decade, no need to change.

I prefer Affinity Photo. One time $50 cost and they update. Literally hundreds of instructional video. MAC and Windows version identical.

I am one of those nerds that like to always have up-to-date software, especially for my photography. Therefore, I subscribe to Light Room Classic CC and Photoshop CC
LR4 is obsolete. It wouldn't edit any raw image for any of my cameras. So I had to upgrade to 5, then 6 then CC. I don't know how you can use it unless you have a very old camera or you convert all your images to dng's before editing.

I have LR6 and PS 6, in addition to several other new processors. I'll keep using Adobe's offerings while they continue to work. I know how to make them do what I want to do, so I use them.
Isn't that the key? You know how to make them do what you want to do, so you use them. Why would you change. If you want to take on an other learning curve then I would suggest Lightroom Classic/Photoshop 2018 subscription over any other thing else.

I am of the thinking, do 1 thing, do it well, accept critiques and cherish praise...Julian
We often see folks mention having the 'latest and greatest' with the Adobe Subscription. But I never see anyone mention what those latest and greatest things are, nor show us how they improve an image.
Any volunteers?

I didn't like it (had LR 5). Its a good program, but I was used to bridge and went back to using it!
