I've seen it in India... orange Ceylon tea is found lots of places... and "Constant Comment" has been around for ages... Using a lemon wedge may be appropriate for tea drinking but, for this image, a strong splash of color might be helpful... IMHO...

May I suggest lemon wedges. I don't think anyone puts oranges in their tea, not even Russians.
Actually, I think the brighter photo brings out the white of the inside of the cups and distracts from the design of the outside. I'd like to see something somewhere between the two photos. When viewing the first photo, I was intrigued by both the arrangement of the tea set, the design of it, and the nice addition of the "swirl" bread which seems to swirl in the opposite direction than that of the tea set. It may, in fact, not be doing so, but gives the feeling that it is. Shall we say the bread gives a sense of motion.
Intriguing! :-) Actually the bread is a traditional Russian poppyseed sweet bread, often eaten when drinking tea.
The arrangement of the tea set is very engaging. I like. The W/B adjustment did wonders. The image could be improved if the shadows could be avoided. The set is very detailed and it's a shame to have shadow lines competing with the patterns in the china. One thing I have learned is that when you have a uniform background like this, it's very easy to select it in photoshop and make it any color you like. It would be fun to see this on different color backgrounds .. light gray .. black ... Red?
