I doubt very much that any other camera company will even try to produce a 24-3000 mm P&S!?

Don't know what you mean by that response...Nikon and Canon have been playing musical chairs with their mega zoom bridge cameras over the years to see who can top the other with their zoom range.

1/2.3 inches should be 24X20mm.

It's not. So-called 1/2.3" sensors are 6.17mm x 4.55mm, for a total area of 28.5 square mm.

Compare to APS-C sensors: approx. 23.5mm x 15.5mm, for about 365 mm sq. (nearly 13X larger).

Or "full frame" sensors: approx. 36mm x 24mm image area, 864 mm sq. (more than 30X larger).

The way those ultra wide ranging zoom cameras achieve their extremely long telephoto effect is by using very tiny sensors. As a result, they are not usable at very high ISOs... and frankly a "3000mm equivalent" lens is very susceptible to camera shake and image quality is seriously degraded shooting through a great deal of atmosphere. The "24 to 300mm" quoted is a "full frame/film equivalent". The camera's zoom is actually a 4.3-539 mm focal length (which is already pretty amazing, 125X). It's only with the tiny sensor's approx. 5.6X "lens multiplication factor" that allows it to "act like 23-3000mm". It's also a variable aperture lens: f/2.8-8.0. 16MP) and JPEGs only don't help with image quality, either. ISOs go as high as 1600, 3200 and 6400... but I bet they're pretty ugly coming from that tiny sensor!

Various reviews of the new P1000 (why didn't they call it a P3000?) leave me unimpressed. Yes, it's pretty amazing to see such an extreme range and what "3000mm" looks like. But the images it's producing just aren't all that great.

EDIT: Canon's most ambitious camera of this type is their SX60 HS, with a similarly tiny senor and "full frame/film equivalent 24-1365mm" zoom range (65X).

be prepared for all those "gee whiz" photos of the moon!

I know and agree, Nikon even put in a preset for "Moon" shots built into this camera. Alfa (from the UK) will soon have lots of competition.

I'm pretty sure the market will determine that.

If the P1000 sells like hot-cakes, count on others duplicating it. If the market doesn't want it, others will be glad they weren't first.

There is no competition for the P900 and it sold reasonably well...

But I will agree with being the first; always a high risk venture!

3000mm Zoom is amazing which should let you see a bird a mile away.
Otherwise look at this comparison. The 4K & shoot now and focus later feature is also amazing at much less.

Actually it’s good for moon pics as you don’t need fast lens or high iso to shoot the moon.

But you do need a stable atmosphere!

I've noticed that it seems as though user comments on new gear start out quit positive, But the longer such comments linger on, the more things (often) seem to level off a bit. So I'll need to give this one some time before considering the purchase for my needs. I could use the longer zoom for my wildlife subjects; hence my initial interest in Nikon's announcement.

Since what you need is not personal experience on that model,
Your research on Google is just as good as anybody's

Anybody know of any "Hands on" reviews of the P1000 yet?? While we are seeing a lot of "Oh woe is me . . ." comments from our DSLR enthusiasts, I have not actually found any full testing reviews on line yet. Are there any??

And no, DSLR enthusiasts, I am not demeaning you. A Bridge Camera will never equal a high quality DSLR Body paired with a high quality set of lens! (By the way, what would a 3000mm lens cost for a DSLR camera??)

There's not a lot because the camera isn't in most stores yet.

Mostly just overviews and promotions...

Great thing about the P1000, you can go on an African safari photo shoot without leaving home!

The CIA and private eyes are going to love this camera!

I think you will find that 1/2.3″ means (1 divided by 2.3)” or 0.434″ = 11mm and that is the diagonal measure of the sensor.

It is actually much smaller than 11mm. According to Wikipedia the inch notation of sensor sizes came to life long ago when they started replacing the camera tubes. At that time, 1" camera tube had a sensitive area of about 16mm diagonal, so sensors with 16mm diagonal were called 1" sensors. According to this notation, 1/2.3" sensor will have (depending on the manufacturer) something like 7.7mm diagonal. Full table of sensor sizes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format

You are correct, of course, amphoto, but in many cases of new products they are often sent in advance to review sources before the release date. I am hoping this will happen with companies like DPReview.
